Baseball drops doubleheader to Brockport

Red Dragons meet Golden Eagles tomorrow at 11am

ONEONTA, N.Y.—Two late inning rallies by the Brockport Golden Eagles led them to a doubleheader sweep of SUNY Oneonta in a match up between two of the top teams in the New York Region. The Red Dragons entered today's twin bill ranked #2 in the initial NCAA New York Region poll while the Golden Eagles were right behind in the #3 spot. Brockport came from behind in both games to win 3-2 and 5-4.

The two teams are also battling for seeding in the SUNYAC tournament that begins next Friday at Cortland. Oneonta was in second place entering today while Brockport was in third. The two teams will complete its three-game series tomorrow beginning at 11a.m. and, a win by Oneonta, will put them in second. The Red Dragons will then have to wait and see what happens in Brockport's final conference game, which will be played tomorrow in Oneonta versus Plattsburgh immediately following the first game.

The two starting pitchers in game 1 were cruising along through the first 5-1/2 innings with nothing but zeros on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the sixth Oneonta freshman, Jake Robinson (East Norwich/Oyster Bay), hit a two-out, two-run home run over the left field fence. It was Robinson's first collegiate round-tripper and gave the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead.

A leadoff single by senior Mike Goldstein started the top of the eighth inning for Brockport and that was the last batter Oneonta starter, Chris Smith, would face. Smith pitched seven innings allowing five hits and one run while striking out seven.

Goldstein was put out at second base, while allowed Jake Coleman to reach on the fielder's choice. Coleman went to third on a Max Keado single through the right side giving the Golden Eagles runners at the corners with one out. Corey Booth then singled to right field to drive in Coleman from third. A walk to Max Zimmerman loaded the bases and finished the day for reliever Chris Tyson (Niskayuna/Niskayuna), who ended up taking the loss in both games today.

New pitcher, Corey Andresen (Deposit/Deposit), was greeted by a double to left field by Mike Weakley, that knocked in both Booth and Keado to give Brockport a 3-2 lead.

James Williamson pitched the eighth and Justin McCarthy pitched the ninth to preserve the game 1 win for Brockport.

Oneonta jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game 2 scoring single runs in each of the first three innings to support starter Ken Smith (Ossining/Ossining). Smith left the game in the top of the seventh with Oneonta leading 3-2. Smith would get a no decision for the game as he was charged with three runs, one earned, and seven hits. He struck out three and walked four before giving way to Tyson with two outs in the top of the seventh.

Kevin Knack (Ghent /Ichabod Crane) scored an unearned run in the first inning when the Brockport left fielder made an error on a double by Michael DeCarr (Syracuse/Westhill). In the second inning, Knack drove in Oneonta's second run on a single through the right side that scored Mike Mascari (Syracuse/Westhill) from second base. DeCarr then hit a solo home run to left field to give the Red Dragons a 3-0 lead after three innings of play.

Brockport got one run back in the fourth inning when Mascari made a pair of errors on the same play that allowed Booth to score from second after he singled to start the inning and stole second.

A double to right center field by eventual winning pitcher, Anthony Siracusa, cut Oneonta's lead to 3-2 entering the home half of the sixth inning.

Brockport rallied in the seventh with two outs starting with a single to right field by Keado that chased Smith from the game. Booth kept the rally going with an infield single before both runners moved up on a wild pitch by Tyson. Zimmerman then walked to load the bases, which set up the drama for Weakley.

A fielding error by Knack allowed Weakley to reach second base while both Booth and Keado scored to give Brockport a 4-3 lead. Jake Privitera, who pinch ran for Zimmerman, made it to third base on the play. A single to center field by Kyle Tracy knocked in Privitera for the Golden Eagles fifth and final run.

Oneonta made the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh as they took advantage of a couple of errors by Brockport to pull to within one run at 5-4 with one out and the tying run on first base. DeCarr hit a one-out single and went to second on a wild pitch before going to third on throwing error by the catcher. He scored when Tracy dropped the third out in right field. Siracusa then got the final two outs on a pop out and fly out to end the game.
