Oneonta, NY – The SUNY Oneonta softball team got a solid pitching performance from freshman Kerry Leggett in game 2 of a doubleheader split with Brockport State in SUNYAC action today. Leggett earned her fourth win of the season in a five-inning 11-2 win. She struck out four batters and allowed only a single hit in the game.
Brockport got on the board quickly in the top of the first inning, but that was all they could muster until the fourth.
Oneonta (17-18/8-8) got on the board in the second, third and fourth innings. Senior Katie Hackenburg started the second inning with a double to right center and senior Sam Voncina ripped a pitch to right center and ended up on third base while scoring Hackenburg. Kalyn Deso followed with another triple to right field and scored on a Jaime Lukas single. Three more consecutive singles by Stacey Donald, Tricia Kendziera and Jillian Serraro finished off the inning. Six runs had scored by the end.
The Red Dragons were not finished. The bottom of the fourth inning saw Oneonta tacking on four more runs to increase their lead to 11-2. Doubles by Kendziera and Serraro and both scored. Deso cleared the bases on a triple to right center.
Oneonta hit the ball well in game 2, scattering eleven hits throughout the field. Kendziera, Serraro, Voncina and Deso all had multiple hits with Deso going 3-for-3 and four runs batted in.
In game 1, both Brockport and Oneonta stranded eight runners on the bases.
Brockport (21-12/7-8) scored five runs in the top of the third inning and were led by the arm of their ace pitcher, Stephanie Geer (Binghamton/Seton Catholic), to the 8-1 victory. Geer threw a complete game six hitter allowing one earned run and striking out four. A three-run homerun by sophomore Danielle Sage (Oakfield/Oakfield-Alabama) opened the game up. Classmate Jenna Yates (West Seneca/West Seneca) finished the game 3-for-4 including a home run to start the top of the seventh.
Oneonta's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, junior Korin Ditulli singled to right center. Freshman Laura Loudis tripled down the right field line to score Ditulli, but was thrown out at home when trying to score on an errant throw.
Kendziera finished the game as the only Red Dragon to have multiple hits in the game with two, which were both doubles.
The Red Dragons will be in action again tomorrow when they play Geneseo after the game was postponed from Friday due to rain. The game time for the doubleheader is 12 noon.
