FREDONIA, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta softball team suffered its second straight doubleheader sweep today, dropping a pair at Fredonia. The Red Dragons fell in the first game, 4-1, and then lost game 2, 7-3.
Oneonta (16-15/7-7 SUNYAC) did outhit Fredonia (23-6/11-4) in the first game, 7-4, but only managed a run in the top of the sixth. The Red Dragons loaded the bases with one out, and a ground out to second base by senior Stacey Donald, knocked in Carrie Acre, who entered the game as a pinch runner for Katie Hackenburg, who singled to start the inning.
Three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the Blue Devils gave them the room they needed for the win.
In game two, Oneonta took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A two-out double by Hackenburg knocked in Jillian Serraro from first base after she reached on a fielder's choice.
Oneonta trailed 2-1 entering the fifth inning before scoring a pair to regain the lead. Sophomore Jaime Lukas hit a one-out double to drive in Acre from first base. Lukas got to third base on the throw to the plate and then was squeezed home by Donald.
Unfortunately, the lead didn't last long as Fredonia came right back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth before adding three more runs in the sixth inning. Three errors by Oneonta led to four unearned runs in the contest.
Oneonta will be back in action this Tuesday at Rensselaer for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
