Baseball sweeps Plattsburgh behind strong pitching

Red Dragons now 10-1 in the SUNYAC

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta pitching staff once again led the baseball team today as they took a pair of wins on the road against Plattsburgh. The Red Dragons are now 17-8 overall and 10-1 in the SUNYAC, which keeps them ahead of Cortland at the top of the conference standings.

In game 1 of the twin bill with the Cardinals, senior Ken Smith (Ossining/Ossining) went the distance in a 7-2 victory. Smith allowed two runs, both in the first inning, on five hits while recording six strikeouts in picking up his fourth win of the season against no defeats. Smith allowed only two hits over the final six innings of today's game.

The Red Dragons chased the Plattsburgh starter, Tyler Greene, from the game in the fourth inning as they touched him up for seven runs on seven hits. Leading the attack was junior Kevin Knack (Ghent /Ichabod Crane) and sophomore Bryan Marotta (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) out of the leadoff spots in the order.

Knack was 3-for-4 with a pair of triples, three runs scored and two runs batted in. Marotta was 4-for-4 hitting in the No. 2 spot in the lineup with a double and three runs batted in.

In the second game, junior Joshua Herzenberg (White Plains/White Plains) turned in another stellar performance on the mound in leading Oneonta to a 5-1 win. Herzenberg threw 8-2/3 innings allowing one run and striking out two batters. With Plattsburgh's run scored in the seventh inning, Herzenberg had a scoreless streak of 22-2/3 innings snapped that dated back to the second inning of the first game versus Oswego on Apr. 2.

Offensively, it was Marotta and senior Jonathan Wolfanger (Oneonta/Oneonta) that led the Red Dragons with three hits each. Wolfanger also scored two runs and drove in one run while Marotta scored a pair of runs.

Oneonta scored a single run in the top of the first and added to its lead with a three-run fourth inning. Marotta led off the inning with a single followed by a single by Michael DeCarr (Syracuse/Westhill). Wolfanger hit a two-out single to drive in Marotta before junior Cody Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack) tripled to right center field to drive in both DeCarr and Wolfanger.

Oneonta will have a couple of days off before heading to Keystone College for a single game on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
