Baseball drops one at Union 5-4

Red Dragons lose second straight

SCHENECTADY, NY- The SUNY Oneonta team could not hold on to a 3-0 lead this afternoon as they fell on the road to Union college 5-4. Union is now 7-9 overall on the season. Oneonta falls to 15-8.

Cody Portin got the start for Union and went six innings giving up five hits, three runs (two earned), walked three, and struck out five for his first win of the season. Quinn Rhoda pitched one inning of relief and struck out one for his first save.

At the plate, Tyler Heck was 3-for-4 with a double, one run scored, and one RBI. Anthony Cassese was 2-for-4 with a double, one run scored, two RBIs and a stolen base. Joe Bradlee went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Oneonta starter Corey Andresen (Deposit/Deposit) went four innings and gave up six hits, three earned runs, two walks while striking out six. Peter Linder was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and one run scored. Jonathan Wolfanger (Oneonta/Oneonta) was 1-for-4 with a double, one run scored, and an RBI.

The Red Dragons got on the board with two runs in the second inning. Wolfanger would hit a two-out double to drive in Mike Arcuri before coming in to score on a single by Matthew Whelehan (Brooklyn/Midwood).

Oneonta would add one run in the fourth to go up 3-0 when Whelehan singled sown the left field line to drive in Lindner from third base.

Union would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Bradlee led off with a single and then Heck followed with another single. Dane Flavin then singled to load the bases. Cassese then ripped a double down the left field line that scored Heck and Bradlee. Dom Calistro struck out and Fernando Gomez flied out to center field that scored Flavin from third. David Peretti's single scored Cassese which the Dutchmen the 4-3 lead.

Union would add one run in the sixth inning. With two outs, Bradlee walked. Heck hit a double, which fell just short of going over the wall to score Bradlee and make it 5-3 Union.

Oneonta pulled to within a run in the eighth inning on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Jake Robinson (East Norwich/Oyster Bay). Robinson hit a two-out single to drive in Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens).

Oneonta will have a day off before traveling to Plattsburgh on Thursday for a SUNYAC doubleheader beginning at noon.
