Softball takes two at Union

Red Dragons now 13-8

SCHENECTADY, NY – SUNY Oneonta leadoff batter Tricia Kendziera had five hits on the day, Kerry Leggett had a save and a win and the SUNY Oneonta softball team swept a doubleheader at Union College Monday at Alexander Field, 3-0 and 7-3. The Red Dragons improved to 13-8 while the Dutchwomen fell to 6-18 on the season.

In the opener, Jessica Bartalsky improved to 6-2 with the complete game win for the Red Dragons. She struck out eight and allowed three singles. Kerry Leggett earned her third save by striking out the side in the seventh. Kendziera had three of the Red Dragons' 11 hits.

Oneonta's first run came in when Kendziera, who led off the game with a double, scored when she went halfway down the line and scored after Jillian Serraro stole second. Stacey Donald hit her second homer of the year, a solo shot to left in the third and Serraro drove in Donald with an RBI single in the seventh. Both Donald and Serraro had two hits each for Oneonta, which posted 11 hits in the contest.

Union pitcher Alyssa Wolejko went the route and recorded six strikeouts.

Oneonta jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game Two, featuring an RBI infield groundout by Sam Voncina, an RBI double by Katie Hackenburg and a single that scored Hackenburg.

The Dutchwomen made it 3-1 when Alicia Jones drove in a run with a two out single. Union tied it in the third with only one hit, but took advantage of two walks and an infield throwing error to make it 3-3.

Oneonta sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs on five hits in the top of the fourth. Kalyn Deso brought one in with a single and Jaime Lukas drove in a run with a triple while the other two runs scored on an error to make it 7-3. Meg Beditz and Donald had three hits each in the nightcap for Oneonta.

Lauren Hoffman had three of Union's four hits.

Leggett came in for relief and allowed just one hit while striking out four in 4 2/3 innings to earn her second win of the season.

Amanda Blake gave up four hits and did not allow a run in 3 1/3 innings of Union relief.

Oneonta is at Ithaca Wednesday then hosts SUNYAC rival New Paltz Saturday.
