Baseball win streak snapped by New Paltz

Red Dragons fall 5-2 in series finale

ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta baseball team managed only five hits today in its 5-2 loss against New Paltz in the final game of a three-game series with the Hawks. The loss for Oneonta snapped its 11-game win streak as they are now 15-7 overall and 8-1 in the SUNYAC.

The game was tied 2-2 before New Paltz (11-12/3-5) scored three runs over the final two innings to take the win. Two of the three runs were unearned as a pair of errors cost the Red Dragons.

A leadoff single by Mike Marash chased Oneonta starter, Jeffrey Carter (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), from the game in the top of the eighth. Carter was charged with eight hits and three runs today and took the loss after Marash scored the go-ahead run. A two-out single to right field by Matt Kaldon drove in Marash from second base.

In the ninth inning, Marash singled in Dylan Franco from third base with two outs. Franco entered the game as a pinch runner for Chris Paulicelli, who drew a walk to start the inning. The second run of the inning was scored by Marash, who came in from third on a throwing error by Oneonta's third pitcher of the game, Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison).

Oneonta scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the third to pull within 2-1. A leadoff triple by freshman Jake Robinson (East Norwich/Oyster Bay) was followed by a ground out to the second baseman by junior Michael Center (Schenectady/Schenectady), which allowed Robinson to score from third base.

The Red Dragons benefitted from a dropped fly ball by the New Paltz center fielder to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mike Mascari (Syracuse/Westhill) led off the inning with a high fly ball to center that came out of the fielder's glove allowing Mascari to reach second base. Junior Cody Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack) pinch ran for Mascari and made it to third on an infield single by senior Jonathan Wolfanger (Oneonta/Oneonta). Hitt scored when Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.

Sophomore Michael Pinnola went the distance for the Hawks allowing five hits and one earned run. He struck out three in recording his third win of the season.

Oneonta will be at Union this coming Tuesday for a single 9-inning game beginning at 4:00 p.m.
