Softball opens season with pair of wins

TUCSON, AZ—The SUNY Oneonta softball team showed no effects of indoor practices for the last month as their bats smoked on opening day in picking up a pair of wins to start the 2011 season. The Red Dragons pounded opposing pitching for 29 runs and 29 hits in wins against Haverford College and Pitt-Bradford.

The offensive star of today was senior Sam Voncina (Derby, Lake Shore), who collected six hits on the day including three that left the yard while driving in six runs.

Junior Jessica Bartalsky (New Paltz, New Paltz) pitched two complete games today and picked up two wins for Oneonta. In 12 innings of work she allowed 10 runs, eight earned, while registering six strikeouts.

Oneonta fell behind 3-0 after two innings before scoring four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-3 lead. The big blow in the inning was a two-run homer by Voncina to left field that scored Jillian Serraro (Hopewell Jct, John Jay), who tied the game one batter earlier with an infield single.

Haverford scored its final three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead, but the Red Dragons stormed back with four runs in its half of the sixth to go back ahead 8-6. Senior Stacey Donald (Saugerties, Saugerties), junior Korin Ditulli (Hyde Park, F.D. Roosevelt) and freshman Chandler Campbell (Port Jervis, Port Jervis) each drove in a run during the inning.

Oneonta blew the game wide open in the top of the seventh with nine runs. Voncina started the inning with a double and then capped the inning with a two-out, two-run home run.

Seven players finished the game with two or more hits including Voncina, who had four hits and four runs batted in.

Oneonta continued to pound the ball, scoring runs in each of the first four innings en route to the five-inning win. The Red Dragons collected 11 hits, led by Voncina, Serraro, Donald and Katie Hackenburg (Queensbury, Queensbury), who each had two hits in the game. Voncina, Serraro and Hackenburg also drove in two runs each.

Oneonta scored three runs in the first and fourth innings while scoring four runs in the second and two runs in the third inning. Serraro had a two-run double and Voncina hit a two-run homer to account for the four runs in the second inning.
