Volleyball drops home match versus Ithaca in five sets

Red Dragons prepare for SUNYAC pool play

Box Score

The Oneonta State volleyball team fell tonight in five sets to visiting Ithaca College.  The loss, which was the Red Dragons fifth straight, drops them to 13-17 overall while the Bombers leave town 17-11 overall.

Oneonta rallied from an early 2-5 deficit in the opening set to win 25-18.  Oneonta took an 8-7 lead and never looked back en route to the opening set victory.

Ithaca took the second set 25-19.  The Bombers broke a 12 all tie with a pair of points to give them enough cushion that Oneonta couldn't overcome.

The third set went pretty much like the first set, with Oneonta getting a one-point lead at 10-9 and never surrendering the lead on its way to winning 25-19.

The two teams battled closely in the fourth set and were tied at 18-18 before Ithaca closed out the match with seven unanswered points in a 25-18 win.

In the fifth-and-deciding set, it was all Bombers as they jumped out to an 8-1 lead at the change en route to the 15-8 win to clinch the match.

Junior Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) and sophomore Erica Darpino (Endicott/Union-Endicott) (Endicott/Union Endicott) led the Oneonta attack with 13 and 10 kills respectively.  Junior Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) (Gloversville/Broadalpin-Perth) had a team high 39 assists to go with three aces and 11 digs.  Senior Jessica Zerega (New City/Clarkstown) (New City/Clarkstown) led the defense with 25 digs.

Oneonta will be in action this Friday as they begin play in the final SUNYAC East pool play at Plattsburgh.  The Red Dragons will face the hosts at 3pm before playing a second match versus Cortland at 7pm.
