Rochester Box Score | Rutgers-Newark Box Score

Saturday, Sep. 4 - Oneonta 1, Rochester 0

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta senior Nha Wright (Schenectady)scored on a direct kick at 59:33, driving the ball from just outside the left side of the penalty area inside the near post with a slew of players from both teams in front. The Red Dragons made the lone goal stand as they defeated Rochester 1-0 in the season opener for both teams.

The final stats for the contest were relatively even. The shots were 12-11 in favor of Rochester and the saves were 3-2 for Oneonta. Sophomore Jamie Chyat (Staten Island) picked up her first win of the season for Oneonta making the three saves.

Oneonta's speed in midfield and in the back kept Rochester at bay. Their best chances came when they got the ball over the defense, but then couldn't do anything because either Chyat came out to cut the angle, or the shots went wide of the goal.

Early in the first half, Rochester goalkeeper Bridget Lang dove at the feet of sophomore Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) (Clifton Park) just as she got to a breakaway pass in the middle of the penalty area. With eight minutes left in the half, the Red Dragons had another great chance. The Yellowjackets gave the ball away on a bad clear where Oneonta's Jennifer Fox (Auburn) got to it, centered it through the goal area, where freshman Melissa Guglielmo (Somers) ran onto it, only to shoot past the left post.

Rochester's best chance in the second half (down, 1-0) came with just under 14 minutes left. The Yellowjackets broke in 3 on 1 (the one being Chyat) and a shot from right wing by Marissa Braverman was miss-hit, wide of the right post. Rochester had a corner kick in the last four minutes that was missed by Chyat, but another miss-hit sent the ball over the cross bar with two of Oneonta defenders in front.

Sunday, Sep. 5 - Oneonta 2, Rutgers Newark 1

Junior Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored a pair of second half goals to lead Oneonta to a come-from-behind win today in the championship game of the Flower City Tournament hosted by Rochester.  DeSimone was selected as the MVP of the tournament.

The Red Dragons trailed when Liana Abreu put Rutgers-Newark ahead in the 41st minute, scoring off a pass from Camelia Valentin pretty much against the run of play. It was 1-0 at the break.

Mikdway thru the second half, Rutgers-Newark goalie Kat Renteria made a series of terrific saves as Oneonta stepped up the offensive pressure. With 12 minutes gone, senior Caitlin Burke (Manorville) smashed a free kick from just outside the area that Renteria turned against the crossbar. Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) hit the rebound high. She followed that over the next 7-8 minutes with 3 more good stops.

Oneonta finally broke through in the 70th minute. The Red Dragons latched onto a bad clear, The ball came to DeSimone behind the defense. As Renteria rushed to the edge of the box, DeSimone chipped it past her and just inside the low left post at 69:47, tying the score.

The game winning goal came off of a throw in deep in the offensive end on the left sideline. Erin Boyle (West Babylon)threw it to the near post where Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) headed it across a packed goalmouth and DeSimone tipped it into the right side of the net at 80:19.
