Oneonta, NY - Day two of the 2010 Mayor's Cup tournament for the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team was a complete turnaround as they returned to their home field to beat Carroll University 1-0 to finish third in this year's tournament.
Oneonta took advantage of its opportunities better in today's game right from the start with three quick shots in the first eight minutes. Carroll responded with its own set of shots with neither team having success.
But the difference in play was team fouls. Carroll was penalized 10 times in the first half alone and finished the game with a total of 18 while Oneonta kept efficient with only eight fouls.
The start of the second half was slow for both teams until freshman
Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) (Somers) had a booming kick from twenty-five yards out that soared over the goalkeeper's head into the back of the net for an unassisted goal in the 55th minute of play.
Two more freshmen made their presence felt in the final minutes of play. Freshmen
Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats) and
Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park) both had great chances to score, but both let the ball just head over the crossbar and out of play.
Hamm and DeSimone were both honored for their play in the Mayor's Cup tournament by being announced to the All-Tournament team.
In the final minute of play Carroll's top shooter, Cody Callender, who was also named to the All-tournament team, had an opportunity in the box. Oneonta keeper,
Amy Lusby (West Babylon/N. Babylon) (West Babylon) had come out of goal to grab a loose ball, but couldn't get to it. Callender was able to turn and send a ball towards the goal where senior co-captain,
Caitlin Burke (Manorville/Center Moriches), set herself up and blocked the shot to keep Carroll off the scoreboard.
Lusby got her first win of the season and recorded 3 saves on the day.
The Mayor's Cup is the longest running soccer tournament in the country dating back to 1975. The division III women's tournament of the Mayor's Cup is in its 15th year having started in 1996.
