Sophomore Kalyn Deso (Schenectady/South Colonie)'s three-run triple with two out in the fifth inning helped Oneonta State to a 5-2 SUNY Athletic Conference Tournament victory over Geneseo on Thursday at Cortland State.

The third-seeded Red Dragons (21-15), who took a 5-1 lead on Deso's hit, continue play in the six-team, double-elimination tournament at 11 a.m. today against No. 2 seed Plattsburgh. Fifth-seeded Brockport fell, 3-2, to Plattsburgh in nine innings Thursday.

Top-seeded Cortland defeated No. 6 New Paltz, 6-0, in Thursday's opener. New Paltz was later eliminated with a 3-2 loss to Brockport.

Katie Hackenburg (Queensbury/Queensbury) singled to start O-State's fifth. Pinch-runner Abby Pierce moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jillian Serraro (Hopewell Jct/John Jay) and advanced to third on an infield single by Sam Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore), who then got caught in a rundown between first and second.

No. 4 seed Geneseo allowed Voncina to take second as Pierce broke for home during the rundown and was caught stealing.

Katie Kraus (North Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial) and Aly Helstrom (Montgomery/Valley Central) followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases for Deso, who drove a triple to center.

O-State took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run single by Kraus. Hackenburg and Serraro had two hits apiece for Oneonta, which received a combined seven-hitter from starter Jessica Bartalsky (New Paltz/New Paltz) and Serraro. Bartalsky (11-6) struck out five, walked two and allowed two hits and one run over 4 2/3 innings.

The SUNYAC Tournament winner earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
