The SUNY Oneonta baseball team easily swept a doubleheader from SUNYAC rival Oswego on Saturday afternoon by the scores of 13-0 in game 1 and 12-3 in game 2.
In the first game, the Red Dragons pounced on Laker starter Dave Widrick (Lowville/Lowville Academy) early, scoring two runs in the first inning as a costly throwing error allowed both #Dan Randall (Salem/Salem)# and #Mike Center# to score. That lead was all Oneonta starter #Dave Filak (Scotia/Burnt Hills)# would need en route to his seventh victory of the season, as the right-hander would allow only three hits over his 8 1/3 innings pitched.
Filak would strike out 12 Oswego batters before giving way to #Chris Smith#, who would obtain the final two outs to seal the victory.
In game 2, the Lakers jumped on senior #Brett Meservey (Catskill/Catskill)# early scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead into the 4th inning.
Oneonta's bats would wake up in the bottom of the 4th inning as the Red Dragons scored nine times in the frame. The frame started off with a walk and hit batter, followed by two quick outs before a string of Oneonta hits would break the game open. Center and senior #Scott Dubben (Roseboom/Cherry Valley Springfield)# would each drive in a pair of runs in the inning.
Picking up the win in relief of Meservey was sophomore #Josh Herzenberg# who pitched six innings of three-hit ball to pick up his first victory of the season.
Besides Center and Dubben, senior #Carmine Caputo (Mahopac/Mahopac)# and junior #Mike Arcuri# finished the game with two RBI's each.
Oneonta will be in action again tomorrow afternoon to conclude a suspended game against Fredonia from April 3. The game will be played at SUNY Oswego and will resume in the 9th inning with the score tied 3-3 at 1 p.m.
