The SUNY Oneonta softball team used seventh inning heroics to win a pair of games today against Oswego. The Red Dragons won both games of the SUNYAC doubleheader in its last at-bat to get back over the .500 mark overall at went to 7-6. The two wins also brings them back to even in conference play at 2-2.
In game one, Oneonta was trailing 5-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning when junior
Sam Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore) started the Red Dragons rally with a single to left field. Senior
Aly Helstrom (Montgomery/Valley Central) followed with a double to center field to score Voncina. Helstrom wasn't on second very long as pinch hitter
Jackie Liebowitz (Bellerose/Benjamin N Cardozo) hit a triple to left field scoring Helstrom.
A three-base error by the center fielder for Oswego allowed pinch runner Abby Pierce to score from third to make the score 5-4 with no outs in the inning. Junior Bethany Truax then knocked in the tying run with a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore
Meg Beditz (Troy/Troy) kept the rally going with a single to center field and went to third on a double by
Jillian Serraro (Hopewell Jct/John Jay). Junior
Katie Hackenburg (Queensbury/Queensbury) ended the game with a single to left field, which scored Beditz.
Sophomore
Jessica Iuliano (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) went the distance in picking up her second win of the season. She allowed six hits, was charged with two earned runs and struck out three batters.
The second game, Oneonta was down to its last out with runners at the corners before ending the game with an RBI single off the bat of Helstrom, which scored Serraro from third. Serraro had reached on a fielder's choice before moving to third on a single by Hackenburg.
The teams traded runs in the second inning before Oneonta took the lead in the fourth inning, 2-1. Helstrom doubled to right center and Pierce, who pinch ran for Helstrom, score on a fielding error.
Oswego fought back to tie it once again in the sixth inning aided by a fielding error by Hackenburg. Freshman Sue Schoff (Little Falls/Little Falls) hit a one-out double and advanced to third on the error. She then scored on an attempted double steal in which Oneonta got the runner out between first and second, but the throw was late to get Schoff.
Sophomore
Jessica Bartalsky (New Paltz/New Paltz) picked up her fourth victory of the season allowing one earned run on five hits.
Oneonta will play again Tuesday, April 6th at home against Union for a non-league doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
