SUNY Oneonta sophomore
Kalyn Deso (Schenectady/South Colonie) drove in six runs including four via a grand slam in powering the Red Dragons to an 11-3 win in game 1 of a doubleheader sweep today against visiting Fredonia. Deso's round-tripper broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the third inning when the Red Dragons exploded for six runs in overcoming a 3-1 deficit. Deso also ended the game in the home half of the sixth inning with a triple that drove in a pair to give Oneonta (17-12/8-4) the win via the eight-run rule.
The two wins for Oneonta also put them in a solid position in the SUNYAC standings as the regular season
winds down to the tournament. Only six teams make it to the SUNYAC tournament and, after today's sweep, Oneonta is sitting in second place behind undefeated Cortland, who is 12-0.
The Red Dragons pounded out 12 hits in the opener including two hits each from Deso,
Sam Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore),
Katie Hackenburg (Queensbury/Queensbury) and
Katie Kraus (North Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial). Kraus and Hackenburg also had an RBI each in the win.
Fredonia (14-15/5-9) scored all three of its runs in the first three innings including a pair in the third after scoring one run in the first. Freshman Tina Schwartzmeyer (Orchard Park/West Seneca East) led the Blue Devils with two hits and a run batted in.
Sophomore
Jessica Iuliano (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) went the distance striking out one batter in picking up her eighth win of the season.
In the second game, Oneonta jumped right out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning en route to an 8-2 win. Hackenburg was the hitting star, going 3-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in. Both Kraus and Voncina chipped in with two runs batted in each.
Sophomore Lauren Larson (Lakewood/Panama) went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the losing effort for Fredonia.
Oneonta sophomore
Jessica Bartalsky (New Paltz/New Paltz) struck out five in 6-1/3 innings to win her eighth game of the season.
The Red Dragons will be in action again tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Plattsburgh for a SUNYAC doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
