The SUNY Oneonta softball team got a solid relief pitching performance from sophomore Jillian Serraro (Hopewell Jct/John Jay) in game 2 of a doubleheader split with Buffalo State today in SUNYAC action. Serraro threw three innings allowing one hit and no runs as the Red Dragons defeated the Bengals 10-4. She relieved starter Jessica Bartalsky (New Paltz/New Paltz), who pitched four innings, striking out one batter in recording her seventh win of the season.

Oneonta (15-12/6-4) put game 2 away early as they scored three runs in its half of the first inning. Junior Sam Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore) led off the inning with a double to left center field and scored on an infield single by Serraro, who advanced to third on a single by Bethany Truax. Serraro was able to score on a throwing error that also allowed Truax to advance to third on the play and later scored when Katie Hackenburg (Queensbury/Queensbury) grounded out to the shortstop.

The third inning was much the same as the Red Dragons posted five runs on the scoreboard. Voncina reached base due to an error by the center fielder, which led to three runs being scored before a single out was recorded. Voncina scored on a Meg Beditz (Troy/Troy) single, who was plated on a Serraro double. Beditz, Serraro and Truax were all able to score before senior Aly Helstrom (Montgomery/Valley Central) had the final blow of the inning, hitting her first home run of the season, a solo shot, to cap the five runs.

Kalyn Deso (Schenectady/South Colonie) followed Helstrom's lead by hitting her first home run of the season to start the fourth inning.

Serraro finished the game with three hits and three runs batted in while Hackenburg finished the game with a pair of runs batted in.

In game 1, Buffalo (16-16/7-7) was able to come from behind in the top of the seventh to pull out a 4-3 victory. Sophomore Tricia Kennery (Williamsville/Williamsville North) struck out four hitters and allowed only three runs in going the distance for her eighth win of the season.

Junior Samantha Lafer (Chenango Bridge/Chenango Valley) started the Buffalo State 7th with a single. After a walk to junior Julie Joyce (East Pembroke/Pembroke), classmate Laken Pogorzelski (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) doubled home Christina Vega (New York/HS for Environmental Studies), who had pinch run for Lafer. The go-ahead run was scored by Joyce on an RBI single by Sara Morse (Painted Post/Corning West).

The Red Dragons will be in action again tomorrow afternoon when they play at home versus Fredonia in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
