Baseball splits wIth SUNY Cortland

Junior Dave Filak strikes out 14 to lead Oneonta to victory in game 1

SUNY Oneonta junior #Dave Filak (Scotia/Burnt Hills)# pitched a complete game striking out 14 Cortland batters in leading the host Red Dragons to a 4-1 win in game 1 of a doubleheader split with visiting Cortland this afternoon in SUNYAC action. Filak scattered seven hits over the nine innings to pick up his fifth win of the season.

The win in game 1 for Oneonta (19-8/3-4 SUNYAC) also snapped a 10-game skid against its rivals dating back to Apr. 26 of 2006 when Oneonta defeated Cortland 3-1 in the second game of a doubleheader.

Oneonta took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning against Cortland starter, Mike Assmann (Auburn/Auburn). Assmann would leave the game in the seventh inning trailing 4-1 as he dropped to 5-3 on the season in taking the loss.

Senior #Scott Dubben (Roseboom/Cherry Valley Springfield)# singled up the middle to lead off the second inning for Oneonta. He went to second on a pass ball and advanced to third on a deep fly ball to center field by freshman #Mike Mascari (Syracuse/Westhill)#. Senior #Steve Gauck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa)# lined the first pitch he saw into center field to drive in Dubben for the 1-0 lead.

Oneonta would add a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore #Mike Center# got the inning started with a leadoff single before stealing second to move into scoring position. After a Dubben walk, Mascari moved both runners along with a sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position for Gauck, who delivered a single through the left side to score Center while moving Dubben to third. Dubben scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by the designated hitter, #Pete Lindner (Voorheesville/Voorheesville)#.

Oneonta's fourth run of the game came from an RBI single by senior #Carmine Caputo (Mahopac/Mahopac)#, who drove in pinch-runner, #Devin Burch (Horseheads/Thomas A. Edison)# from second base.

Cortland's (25-7/9-1 SUNYAC) lone run of game 1 came in the seventh inning. An infield single by junior Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas Proctor) was followed by a double to left center by senior Khyle Dimino (Brighton/Brighton) to put runners at second and third with one out. Simone scored on a ground out by senior Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham).

In game 2, the score was tied at 2-2 entering the top of the fourth where Cortland put four runs up on the board to take a 6-2 lead. The big blow of the inning was a two-out, three-run home run off the bat of senior Andersen Gardner (Fairport/Fairport) to deep center field.

Oneonta came back with a pair of runs in its half of the fourth to cut its deficit to two runs. Freshman #Mike DeCarr# hit a one-out double down the left field line and came around to score on a single by junior #Mike Arcuri#. A single to left field by Caputo chased Cortland starter, Mike Gentzke (Clarence Center/Clarence) from the game. Both Arcuri and Caputo advanced one base on a wild pitch by reliever Scott Hartling (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) before Arcuri scored on a ground out to second base by sophomore #Kevin Knack (Ghent /Ichabod Crane)#.

Cortland scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-4 lead before Oneonta came back in the bottom of the inning with a single run to trail 8-5 entering the eighth inning.

Oneonta rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run with one out on an RBI single by Dubben. The game ended with Cortland turning a 4-6-3 double play.

Hartling picked up his third win of the season going 4-2/3 innings allowing only two hits, one unearned run while striking out three batters. Senior Ed Southworth (Cortland/Cortland) pitched the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season.
