The SUNY Oneonta softball team used all the daylight given to them to complete a non-conference doubleheader with the visiting King's College Monarchs on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons won game 1 by a score of 8-4, while in a dark-shortened game 2 they fell by a score of 9-8. Sophomore Meg Beditz (Troy/Troy) led the team collecting four hits in her combined seven at-bats for the afternoon.

In the opening contest Oneonta pounced on King's starter Lindsey Hoerner (Anneville, PA/Northern Lebanon) by scoring six times in the first inning. Hoerner walked senior Aly Helstrom (Montgomery/Valley Central) for the first run of the game.  It was followed by a 2-RBI single by designated player Jackie Liebowitz (Bellerose/Benjamin N Cardozo). The scoring in the bottom of the first would be capped by a 2-RBI double to right-center field by Beditz.

Oneonta starter Jessica Iuliano (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) pitched well through the first five innings allowing just one run. She would end the day collecting four strikeouts in the game, which took 2:12 to complete. Iuliano would collect the win to improve her record to 6-4, while Hoerner would take her fifth loss of the season against nine wins.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Red Dragons sent sophomore Jessica Bartalsky (New Paltz/New Paltz) to the hill against the Monarchs, as she squared off with King's freshman Annie Erndl (Clarksburg, NJ/Allentown).

Both right-handers struggled to find their games as each allowed 7-run innings to its opponent with little help from their defenses behind them.

Erndl would help herself out quickly when she hit a 2-run home run in the top of the second inning to give the Monarch's an early 2-0 lead.

Oneonta would answer back with a 7-run third inning as Beditz led off with a double to left field, followed by a double down the left field line by classmate Jillian Serraro (Hopewell Jct/John Jay). The biggest blow of the inning came when junior outfielder Sam Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore) hit a two-run home-run to left field, giving her three round-trippers for the season.

King's would quickly answer back with its own 7-run inning, which was started when Bartalsky walked the first two batters of the inning. After an Erndl single loaded the bases, Bartalsky walked the next batter Stefanie Wingerter (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) to plate a run. The final blow came when catcher Christie Parfitt (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) hit a single to right-center field to score a pair of runs.

With the 7-run fourth inning the Monarchs had a 9-7 lead with the sun beginning to set behind the hills of Oneonta, the Red Dragons would score once more after an infield single by Helstrom drove in catcher Katie Kraus (North Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial), who tripled just one batter before. The game would be called after 5 1/2 innings due to darkness allowing King's to get away with a win as the two teams split the pair of games.

Oneonta will return to conference play again this Friday, April 16th as they travel to take on the Potsdam Bears in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. The roadtrip will continue to Plattsburgh where the Red Dragons will take on the Cardinals in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 17th.
