SUNY Oneonta junior #Dave Filak (Scotia/Burnt Hills)# struck out 10 batters in six innings of work in leading the Red Dragons to a 10-2 win in game 1 of a doubleheader split with visiting Plattsburgh this afternoon. Filak scattered four hits over the six innings to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Oneonta (16-6/2-3 SUNYAC) would get all the runs they would need in game 1 in the bottom of the second inning. The Red Dragons scored four runs in the inning capped by a two-run home run by senior leadoff hitter #Carmine Caputo (Mahopac/Mahopac)#. Caputo hit the ball the opposite way and let the wind that was blowing out to left field take it over the fence to give Oneonta a 4-1 lead.
The Red Dragons would add four more runs in the home half of the fifth inning on a pair of RBI singles by sophomore #Kevin Knack (Ghent /Ichabod Crane)# and freshman #Mike DeCarr#. Senior #Scott Dubben (Roseboom/Cherry Valley Springfield)# also drove in a run on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
In game 2, Plattsburgh (20-4/2-2 SUNYAC) scored all three of its runs in the top of the first and then held Oneonta in check en route to a 3-2 win. Sophomore Tyler Greene (Fort Edward/South Glens Falls) went the distance striking out eight batters to move to 4-0 on the season.
The big hit in the first inning for the Cardinals was a single to center field by junior Donny Coolidge (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) that drove in a pair of runs.
Oneonta scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but couldn't rally in the bottom of the ninth. Senior Dan Randall (Salem/Salem) (Salem/Salem) hit his team-leading seventh home run to lead off the fourth inning while Knack hit a two-out single in the fifth inning to drive in DeCarr.
Oneonta starting pitcher #Brett Meservey (Catskill/Catskill)# took the loss for the Red Dragons despite settling in after the first to pitch six scoreless innings before being relieved in the eighth inning. Meservey struck out six hitters and was charged with only one earned run.
