The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team opened its short home schedule and its 2010 NEAC schedule today with a convincing 7-2 against visiting Penn State Berks. The Red Dragons won two-of-three doubles matches and five-of-six matches in singles play for the final. The longest match of the afternoon came at first singles between senior #Matt Steinhauser (Plainview/JFK)# of Oneonta and sophomore
Andrei Bacalu (Rockville, MD/Walter Johnson) of Penn State. Trailing in the match one set to none and down 5-2 in the second set, Steinhauser came all the way back to win 7-6 in the tie-breaker to even the match at a set apiece. The two played a super tiebreak to 10 where Bacalu finally prevailed 10-5.
The final five singles' points for Oneonta were won by sophomore #Adam Shapiro (East Rockaway/Lynbrook)#, the Slifkin brothers, #Josh# and #Adam#, junior #Will Sacco# and junior #John Taft (Queensbury/Glens Falls)#.
Shapiro and Taft were also victorious at second doubles while the sophomore duo of #Joe Milstein# and #Dan Evans (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills)# won at third doubles for the Red Dragons. Bacalu was also a winner at first doubles with his partner, Brendan Penn (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby), as they defeated Oneonta's junior tandem of #Jonathan Dorin (Lynbrook/Lynbrook)# and Sacco, 8-6.
