The Red Dragons came from behind to tie the game at eight apiece to force extra innings in the first of a twin bill with Gettysburg. Two runs in the top of the ninth inning gave Oneonta its first lead of the contest and relief pitcher #Anthony Bates (Utica/Proctor)# was masterful in shutting down the Bullets en route to the 10-8 win.
Bates relieved starter #Jeffrey Carter (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa)#, who was tagged for 11 hits and eight runs in his five innings of work. In his four innings, Bates allowed only one hit and struck out five to pick up his first win of the season.
The Red Dragons pounded out 14 hits led by senior #Steve Gauck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa)#, who was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Classmate #Scott Dubben (Roseboom/Cherry Valley Springfield)# and freshmen #Michael DeCarr (Syracuse/Westhill)#, #Bryan Marotta (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa)# and sophomore #Matthew Whelehan (Brooklyn/Midwood)# each collected two hits in the game.
Gauck got things started in the ninth with a leadoff single. He advanced to second and came around to score the first run of the inning on a double to left center by Marotta. Marotta went to third on a fly out by Whelehan and then scored on an RBI single by high school teammate and, fellow freshman, #Mike Mascari (Syracuse/Westhill)#.
Game 2 – Oneonta 6, Gettysburg 5

After back-to-back infield singles by #Kevin Knack (Ghent /Ichabod Crane)# and Dubben in the top of the seventh inning of game two, #Dan Randall (Salem/Salem)# sacrificed the two into scoring position. #Mike Center# was then intentionally walked to load the bases where Gauck lined a single to left field to drive in Knack and Dubben to break a 4-4 tie.
Bates would pitch the bottom of the inning in relief of #Chris Smith# to pick up his third save of the year. Smith was Oneonta's third pitcher in game two and he pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief after entering the game in the fifth inning to relieve #Josh Herzenberg#, who had pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter #Dave Filak (Scotia/Burnt Hills)#.
Knack was the hitting star of the night cap going 3-for-4 with two runs and two runs batted in.
