SUNY Oneonta had the ball in the waning seconds of tonight's SUNYAC contest against Geneseo and got the shot they wanted when sophomore
Madison Slagle (Rome/Rome Catholic) came off a screen and lined up a three-pointer that found nothing but net to break a 54 all tie with 6.4 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing possession, Geneseo (12-8/8-5) was able to get a good look from the top of the key by junior Alyssa Polosky (Endicott/Union-Endicott), who took a three that hit the front of the rim and bounced left as the buzzer sounded to end the game.
Slagle finished the game as the high scorer in the contest with 15 points, hitting 3-of-5 from behind the arc.
Geneseo kept the game close with the three ball hitting nine in the game. They also had a rebounding advantage of 42-30 including 14 off the offensive glass, but they were hurt by its 20 turnovers. Oneonta junior
Mary Kate O'Connell (Altamont/Guilderland) was huge down the stretch for the Red Dragons scoring six of her ten points in the final five minutes including the basket that put Oneonta ahead 54-52.
A layup by Polosky tied the score at 54 apiece with 1:08 remaining in the contest setting up the heroics by Slagle.
Polosky led four Blue Knights in double figures with 13 points to go with a game high nine rebounds.
Back-to-back baskets on their first two trips down the floor by sophomores
Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills) and Slagle gave Oneonta a quick 4-0 lead. Geneseo came back with five unanswered including a three-point basket by Polosky to give the Blue Knights its first lead of the contest. There would be five more lead changes during the first half with the last coming at 20-19 in favor of the Red Dragons on a jumper by freshman
Sarah Waltersdorf (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). Oneonta took a slim 25-23 lead into the break. Slagle and Polosky each had nine points to lead their respective squads.
The Red Dragons will be home again tomorrow afternoon against Brockport fogame beginning at 2:00 p.m. Spectators are asked to wear pink to the game in support awareness. All proceeds from tomorrow's game will go to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
