SUNY Oneonta senior
Sara Chrystie (Oxford/Oxford) scored 11 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked six shots tonight, but the host Red Dragons fell to rival Cortland 70-60 in a contest between the two top teams in the SUNYAC. The loss for Oneonta allowed Cortland to capture the regular season title entering the final weekend of the season and the top spot in the conference tournament, which begins next Tuesday on campus sites.
Sophomore
Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills) led Oneonta (16-8/14-3) with 19 points and nine rebounds. Classmate
Madison Slagle (Rome/Rome Catholic) added 14 points.
Oneonta got as close as 55-53 with 4:55 remaining in the game, but five straight points by sophomore
Micki Volpini (Newfield/Newfield) gave Cortland (20-3/15-1) the cushion they would need down the stretch. Volpini finished the game with 16 points. The visitors held a 49-33 rebound advantage in tonight's contest including 20-11 off the offensive glass.
Senior Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) paced Cortland with 22 points and 17 rebounds.
Neither team shot particularly well during the opening 20 minutes. Oneonta finished the first 20 minutes shooting 27 percent while Cortland was at 25 percent.
Laing already had a double double in the first half matching her uniform number in points and rebounds with 11.
Chrystie led Oneonta with six rebounds to go with a career high five in the opening half of play.
Oneonta will end its regular season this coming Friday at New Paltz.
