The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team completed its weekend sweep of Buffalo State
and Fredonia this afternoon with a 72-62 victory at Fredonia to run its overall record to 16-7 and 14-2 in the
SUNYAC. Senior
Sara Chrystie (Oxford/Oxford) and sophomore
Madison Slagle (Rome/Rome Catholic) each scored a season high 17 points to lead the Red Dragons.
The two teams battled closely through the first 12 minutes of the contest until a three-pointer by Slagle put
Oneonta ahead for good by a score of 19-17 at the 7:37 mark. From that point, the Red Dragons continued to
build its lead to 10 points at halftime 36-26.
Chrystie, who continues to lead Div. III in assist-to-turnover ratio, was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. She also had four steals, seven rebounds while dishing out three assists and blocking two shots. As a team, Oneonta blocked a total of nine shots in the game.
Slagle hit 7-of-12 from the field in the game including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. She scored her 17 points in just 25 minutes of action.
Fredonia (10-11/6-9) had three players in double figures led by Grace Moore, who had 15 points.
Today's win for Oneonta sets up the showdown this coming Tuesday between the top two teams in the SUNYAC.
Oneonta will host South Kortright native and rival Cortland in the “Battle of the Red Dragons” beginning at 6:00 p.m. Entering the game, Cortland is 14-1 in the conference and Oneonta sits a half game behind. There's only one week remaining in the regular season and Tuesday's game could determine the top seed for the SUNYAC tournament that begins with quarterfinal action on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
