Red Dragons defeat Skidmore and St. John Fisher

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball won its opening games of the season this weekend at the Skidmore Invitational including a thrilling 82-75 double overtime victory against St. John Fisher. The Red Dragons opened the tournament with a 57-50 win on Friday night against Skidmore.

In the first game, Oneonta's Gabi Regan (Troy) hit a three-pointer with two seconds to play in regulation to tie the game 61-61.

In the first overtime, St. John Fisher's Jessica Krzemien forced a second OT with a lay-up with 16 seconds to play.

The Red Dragons dominated the second extra session, outscoring Fisher 15-8. Ten of Oneonta's 15 points came from the free throw line, with Madison Slagle (Rome) mixing in a key three-pointer.

Slagle finished with 20 points to earn a spot on the all-tournament team along with teammate Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills), who scored 18 points.

In the game, neither team had more than a six point lead at any point in the contest. Oneonta had two, four point leads, one early in the first half and its second midway through the second half. St. John Fisher held its only six point lead at 44-38 at the 12:38 mark of the second half.

In its win against Skidmore, Oneonta built its 28-24 halftime lead to 14 points at the 14:43 mark of the second half before the Thoroughbreds made a run to cut the Red Dragons' lead to four points with 10:39 remaining.

A layup by Skidmore knotted the contest at 45 apiece with 6:34 to go in the game. Six unanswered points by Oneonta including two baskets by senior Mary Kate O'Connell (Altamont) gave Oneonta the lead for good. O'Connell finished the game with 10 points.

Szkotak led Oneonta with 14 points to go with 10 rebounds. Senior Rebecca Bucci (Marlboro) added eight points and a game high 12 rebounds helping Oneonta to a 55-44 edge on the boards.

The Red Dragons will not be in action again until Friday, Dec. 3 when they travel to SUNY Postdam to open the SUNYAC portion of its schedule.
