ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta women's volleyball team honored seniors
Kelsey Klopfer (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) (Baldwinsville) and
Megan Boeltz (Greene/Greene) (Greene) prior to tonight's match and then celebrated by sweeping Union 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 26-24). With the win, Oneonta (15-17) inched closer to the .500 mark while recording its sixth win in the last nine matches.
Oneonta seized control of the opening set, jumping out to a 12-3 lead en route to the 25-18 win. In the second set, the Red Dragons trailed 6-4 before scoring 14 of the next 19 points to take control of that set, which they closed out at 25-19.
The third set was a battle as Oneonta fell behind early before coming back to take its first lead at 15-14. The Red Dragons increased its lead to 19-14 before Union stormed back with six unanswered points to take a 20-19 lead. After an Oneonta timeout, the Red Dragons out-dueled the Dutchwomen to end the match.
Klopfer and sophomore
Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) (Gloversville) each had 15 assists for Oneonta in the match. Boeltz led the Red Dragons with nine kills to go along with four blocks. SUNYAC Player of the Week,
Jessica Zerega (New City/Clarkstown) (New City), led the defense with 12 digs.
Union was led by freshman Casey Tepper, who had nine kills. Senior Bridget Little had five blocks while classmate Erika Van Valkenburg had 23 digs.
Oneonta will be home again this Friday night against cross city rival Hartwick in what is being billed as the “Presidential Match.” Both Colleges' Presidents will be present at the match and will be involved in the opening coin toss. The match begins at 7:00 p.m. and admission is a canned food item that will be given to the local food bank of the winning team's choosing.
