Women’s Soccer: Lusby saves the day

Keeper Amy Lusby had seven saves holding off Cortland

Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Nha Wright (Schenectady/Duanesburg) (Schenectady) scored the game's lone goal in the second half and junior goalie Amy Lusby (West Babylon/N. Babylon) (West Babylon) made seven saves, including several outstanding stops in the second half, to lead the Oneonta women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Cortland Friday afternoon in SUNYAC action.

The host Red Dragons fell to 8-5-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference but still clinched a playoff berth in the SUNYAC Tournament. The visiting Red Dragons improved to 11-4-2 and 6-1-1 and also clinched a conference playoff spot.

For Cortland, senior goalie Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) made five saves. Scoring chances were rare in the opening half. Cortland's best opportunity came in the 38th minute when senior Casey Reinhardt (Hilton) struck a loose ball that barely went wide right with Lusby out of the goal. Five minutes later, Monnier touched a long, looping shot by Oneonta freshman Melissa Guglielmo (Somers) just over the crossbar.

The second half proved to be a much different 45 minutes than the first half with multiple scoring chances for both teams. In the 58th minute, Oneonta sophomore Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches) fired a long shot that deflected off a Cortland defender and headed for the left side of the goal. Monnier cut across the goal and denied the shot with a diving save at the post. A little over four minutes later, Wright scored the game winner. Freshman Sarah Bobroff (Katonah/John Jay) (Katonah) touched a ball back to Wright on the left side of the box. Wright took a shot that she didn't strike clean, but the ball spun inside of the left post from 15 yards out for her fifth goal of the season.

Both teams continued to attack after the score. In the 63rd minute, Cortland sophomore Stacey Wood (New Hyde Park) was alone on the left side of the box and hit a one-time shot. Lusby had charged off her line and deflected the ball to the right with her left hand.

Lusby came up big again in the 70th minute, denying Wood from eight yards out. In the 84th minute, it was Wright's turn to be stopped, except her shot from the left side caromed clean off the left post and was cleared out of danger.

The host Red Dragons had one final chance to even the game. Junior Bridgette DeSantis (Rotterdam/Mohonasen) blasted a shot from the left side that was labeled for the upper right corner in the 86th minute. Lusby made a leaping save and tipped the ball just wide of the right post to preserve the shutout and the win.
