CLINTON, N.Y. -- Hamilton College and SUNY Oneonta played to a 1-1 tie in a non-league women's soccer game at Hamilton's Love Field on Oct. 19.
Hamilton (7-1-3 overall) is tied for seventh in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III East Region Top 10 poll. The Continentals have posted a record of 6-0-1 at home this year. Oneonta (10-4-2) is ranked fifth in the region by the coaches.
Hamilton grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute on the second shot of the afternoon. Laura Wray '11 lofted a soft shot from outside the goalie box that
Amy Lusby (West Babylon/N. Babylon) (West Babylon) tipped into the crossbar. The ball rebounded right to Meg Pengue '12, who controlled it and fired it past the diving keeper for her second goal this year. Wray picked up her third assist.
Anne Graveley '11 almost gave the Continentals a 2-0 lead in the 43rd minute, but her shot from about 15 yards out banged off the right post and sailed over the end line. The Red Dragons trailed 1-0 at the half despite owning an 8-7 edge in shots.
It seemed Hamilton would hang on for the victory until Oneonta forced back-to-back corner kicks in the 88th minute. Senior
Caitlin Burke (Manorville/Center Moriches) (Manorville) scored the equalizer when she popped a header off the crossbar with about 1:45 remaining, the rebound came right back to her, and she easily deposited the ball in the back of the net. The goal was Burke's first this year.
The Red Dragons were the only team to get a shot on goal during the two 10-minute overtime periods. Liza Gergenti '14 made 10 saves for Hamilton, and Lusby stopped nine shots for Oneonta. The Red Dragons held a 19-14 shot advantage, and took 13 corner kicks to just one for the Continentals. Oneonta leads the all-time series, 14-9-6.
Hamilton travels to Clarkson University for a Liberty League game on Saturday, Oct. 23. The Red Dragons are at SUNY Cortland on Friday, Oct. 22.
