Red Dragon overcome late deficit

Box Score Box Score

The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit with a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of play in a 2-2 tie against visiting Hamilton in non-conference soccer action today at Red Dragon Soccer Field.  Sophomores Alicia Vollmer (Liverpool/Liverpool) and Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) both scored just over one minute apart in the contest to erase the deficit from the first half of play.
Vollmer's third goal of the season came in the 81st minute off a corner kick sent in by junior Nha Wright (Schenectady/Duanesburg).  Vollmer was able to get her head on  the ball and bounce it over the outstretched arms of Hamilton (6-5-1) keeper Kate Fowler (Branford, CT/Wilton).
The tying goal for Oneonta (10-2-3) came just one minute and five seconds later on a restart.  Senior Melissa vandenBergh (Hopewell Jct/John Jay) sent a ball in towards the goal that went behind he defense to the right of the Hamilton goal.  There charging to win the loose ball was DeSimone, who then punched it by Fowler to even the score with her team-tying fourth goal of this year.
The Red Dragons trailed early in this one when Hamilton got on the board in the seventh minute.  Sophomore Megan Cairns (Rochester, Our Lady of Mercy) sent a loose ball inside the box over the heads of the Oneonta defense.  Waiting on the other side was junior Anne Graveley (Queensbury/Queensbury), who finished the play with a low shot into the left corner of the goal.
The Continentals took a two goal lead in the 31st minute on a goal by freshman Alex Rimmer (Rye/Rye), who put a shot into he upper right corner of the goal from about 25 yards out.
Oneonta freshman keeper, Jamie Chyat (Staten Island/Staten Island Academy) was busy this afternoon and finished the game with six saves while Fowler made seven for Hamilton.
Oneonta will be in action again this coming Friday afternoon when they host SUNYAC rival Cortland for a game that begins at 4:00 p.m.  With a pair of wins this weekend, Oneonta will claim the conference regular season title and, with it, an opening bye in the SUNYAC tournament.  With the top spot they will be the host for the semifinals and the championship game on campus on Nov. 6-7.
