Caponi enters his sixth season as an assistant coach with the Red Dragons and brings with him tremendous credentials as both a coach and wrestler at all levels.
Caponi is a 2008 graduate of The University of Virginia where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Studies of Women and Gender. In 2009, he earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology from Virginia.
Caponi was an Exceptional Children’s Teacher in North Carolina where he was a classroom instructor in pre-algebra and geometry.
Caponi’s coaching experience prior to Oneonta includes stints at Division I Campbell University (2010-12) and Gardner-Webb University (2009-10).
As a collegiate wrestler at Virginia, Caponi was a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference Champion and four-time finalist, with well over 100 NCAA Career wins. He was a four-time NCAA Division I national qualifier, wrestling at 174 lbs. as a freshman and 184 lbs. during his final three seasons. Caponi also earned honors for his work in the classroom as a member of the ACC academic honor roll.
In High School, Caponi was an Ohio High School Athletic Association State Champion and two-time finalist. He was also a USA Junior Freestyle National Champion and two-time All-American and USA Junior Greco-Roman two-time All-American.
Caponi currently resides in Oneonta with his wife Kathleen and his family. He is employed full time as a Production Supervisor with Cobani located in New Berlin, NY.
