Richard Marcello

Marcello enters his third season with the Red Dragons cross country and track & field coaching staff as an Associate Head Coach.  Marcello is responsible for coaching cross country and the middle distance and distance runners.  In his first two seasons coaching cross country, Marcello led the men to back-to-back NCAA Division 3 National Championship appearances for the first time in school history.  Marcello also coached SUNYAC champions in the Men’s Distance Medley Relay, 5000-meter run, and the 1-mile run.

Marcello comes to Oneonta from the state of Connecticut where he was working as an instructor at his alma mater Sacred Heart University along with serving as a High School cross country and track & field coach.

At Sacred Heart since 2014, Marcello taught exercise science, fitness, kinesiology and coaching methods classes within the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement.  He also was a Clinical Exercise Scientist within the Pioneer Performance Center serving as Co-Director of RUNscience, which was a yearly clinic for high school track and cross country coaches and athletes.

As a high school coach in Connecticut, Marcello coached multiple Southwest Conference Champions, and his teams won two team championships as a Head Coach, and seven team championships as an Assistant.  Marcello coached multiple athletes to the New Balance Indoor and Outdoor National Championships and has multiple All-New England athletes and State Champions.

Marcello competed at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT, where he was a six-season team captain and multiple time Northeast Conference Championship qualifier.  Marcello held school records for the Pioneers at 5,000 and 10,000 meters and was the first athlete in Sacred Heart history to eclipse the 15 minute and 32-minute marks in those respective events.

Marcello graduated from Sacred Heart in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science.  In 2014, he earned his Master of Science degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition at Sacred Heart, graduating with honors.
