John Speranzi

Speranzi enters his 34th season with the SUNY Oneonta Softball program in 2024.  He earned his 600th win as an assistant on Mar. 31, 2018, against Fredonia, placing him in an elite group amongst Division III assistant coaches.

Speranzi spent the 1990 season as the interim Head Coach and has spent the past 31 years as an assistant to one of the most successful Division III programs in the region. During this time period the program has amassed a 637-458-1 record while winning four SUNYAC titles and earning four NCAA Tournament berths.

In 2001, he helped lead the Red Dragons to its best season ever with 38 wins and 10 losses. That same year, as a member of the SUNY Oneonta Softball coaching staff, he was honored with an NFCA Northeast Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award.

A native of Oneonta, Speranzi’s softball coaching experience spans more than 30 years. In 1998 he founded the All-County Softball School, which is now the 6th Ward Athletic Club All-County Softball School.  The school has helped to develop some of the area’s top young softball players.

Speranzi is currently retired after spending more than 25 years as the quartermaster at the New York State Police barracks in Sidney, N.Y. In the fall of 2019, Speranzi was inducted in the Oneonta Athletics Hall of Fame.
