Gregory Cary will begin his first year as an assistant coach at SUNY Oneonta in 2019. Coach Cary arrives with an abundance of experience at the college coaching ranks most recently as the head coach of Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, NY.
While at Brooklyn for the 2018 season, his team saw improvements in batting average, on base percentage, runs batted in and fielding percentage. His senior pitcher had her best season statistically with career highs in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, complete games and also a career low in earned run average.
Prior to Brooklyn, Cary spent time as a volunteer assistant at Division I Manhattan College, along with being a paid assistant at Division II Alderson Broaddus in West Virginia and Division III SUNY Purchase. He also spent a season as the Head Coach of NJCAA Division I Monroe College.
At Alderson Broaddus in 2016, Cary’s primary responsibility was working with the outfielders. He worked with a starting sophomore trio and a senior utility player who went on to combine for a .935 fielding percentage with only seven errors in 48 games. Of the four outfielders, three of them were selected to the Academic All-Conference Team.
Cary was the head softball coach at Monroe College for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He led that team to a 22-17 record in 2014, which was a vast improvement from the 2013 team’s 12-28 mark. His 2015 squad also enjoyed a winning season, finishing with a 17-12 record.
His Monroe squad had the highest team GPA on campus during the 2014-15 Academic year. Six players graduated and four went on to play at NCAA D1 or D2 institutions. Still existing program records in batting average (.371), on base percentage (.428), stolen bases (54), and fielding percentage (.953).
During his two years at SUNY Purchase, Cary served as the assistant softball coach involved in recruiting, practice planning, field maintenance, conditioning workout implementation and game management. The 2014 team doubled the win total from the previous season and the freshmen class went on to win 49 games in 4 years.
Cary played basketball and baseball at Corning Community College while completing his Associate Degree in 2010. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 2014 from SUNY Purchase in Communications and Media Journalism.
