Chris Wilber

Wilber enters his seventh year as the head coach of both the cross country and track & field programs.

The 2023-24 season saw a highly successful year for the Red Dragons. The Oneonta women's cross country team had two national qualifiers in Ella DePhillips and Megan Francoeur, while Jonthomas Bierman qualified on the men's side. The women's team placed second at the SUNYAC Championships as the Oneonta coaches were named SUNYAC Coaching Staff of the Year.

The indoor season saw the women's team record two NCAA Division III All-Americans. Ejim Nnate became the first Oneonta hurdler to be named All-American after a first-team performance in the 60-hurdles. Isabella Fabrizio was named second team All-American in the shot put. The duo went to repeat as All-Americans in the outdoor season with Nnate in the 100-hurdles and Fabrizio in the shot put. Fabrizio was also the SUNYAC Champion in the shot put.

In 2022-23, Francoeur qualified for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. Fabrizio qualified for the national championships in the indoor and outdoor shot put. Jonthomas Bierman was the SUNYAC Champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

In 2020-2021, Wilber’s third year, the Red Dragons did not compete in cross country or indoor track & field due to COVID. Fortunately, they were able to compete in an outdoor season where the Men’s team finished 6th and the Women took 5th place in the conference. Highlights of the 2021 outdoor season included a school record in men’s pole vault and women’s shot put and a women’s team academic honor for the 16th year in a row.

In 2019-2020, men’s cross country made their second consecutive appearance in the national championship where they finished 31st. The track and field program broke three school records (Men’s PV, W 60mH, and W SP) during the indoor season while also having a national qualifier in the weight throw in Norberto Cervantes. The outdoor season was canceled due to Covid-19 pandemic. Amanda Iasparo earned all-academic recognition from the USTFCCCA while the women earned the team honor for the 15th consecutive year.

In his first year as the interim head coach, the men’s XC team earned an at-large bid to the national championships after finishing fourth at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships, the highest finish in program history. Wilber also coached Tyler O’Bryant to All-American finishes in both the 100m and 200m at the Outdoor National Championship.

The previous four years, Wilber served as an associate head coach at Oneonta where he was responsible for coaching the jumps, sprints/hurdles, and multi-event athletes.  During that time, he mentored athletes to five All-American finishes, had 14 individual NCAA qualifiers, 11 conference champions, and eight All-Academic honorees. Athletes have broken 11 school records under his guidance. Also during that time, the men claimed the SUNYAC indoor team title in 2015 while the women won both the indoor and outdoor titles in 2016.

Wilber is a graduate of Ithaca College where he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. He also competed as a jumper for the Bombers track & field program. After graduation, Wilber returned to Ithaca to complete a Master of Science in Health Education while working as a graduate assistant coach. He spent two more years as an assistant coach with the Bomber men’s track & field program, working primarily with the jumpers. During this time, the men won six Empire 8 championships and one NYSCTC championship.

Wilber is a USTFCCCA Specialist in sprints, hurdles, relays, jumps, combined events and strength and conditioning.  He has also completed USTFCCCA Masters level coursework in short sprints and coursework in testing & measurements, weightlifting, and sports psychology. He has also attained a USA Track and Field Level 1 certification.
