Chris Schuler

Schuler enters her 27th season as the head coach for both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams. During her tenure, she has continued to build the program through the recruiting process while increasing the number of participants.

Schuler’s background in sport psychology has taught her team dynamics and team culture is crucial for a program’s longevity and success. Her fundamental philosophy as a coach is to develop more than a team, but to create a family. When an athlete feels committed, dedicated to their team, their family, they will give much more to make a difference. Strong programs are made of hard work, great responsibility, and the highest respect.

The 2023-24 season saw the men's team medal in the 400-freestyle relay (second), the 800-freestyle relay (third), and 200-freestyle relay (third). Additionally senior Mason DeLisio medaled in the 100-freestyle (third).

In 2015 Coach Schuler earned the title of Women’s Coach of the Year. The men’s team performance in 2012 earned Schuler the men’s Coach of the Year honor for the first time and her third honor overall.  In 2000, she was awarded the Women’s Coach of the Year.

In 2006, Schuler had her first SUNYAC champion in men's swimming when Peter Millspaugh '07 won the 200-yard backstroke.  In 2009, she had her first SUNYAC champion on the women’s side when Michele Sano '10 won the 100-yard backstroke, as well as being the first women in the college's history to make an NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Most recently, Alex Miller ’13 captured 3 conference championships titles as well as SUNYAC conference records and NCAA DIII B cut performances in the 100 Backstroke, 200 Backstroke and 400 IM (2013). He was awarded SUNYAC Swimmer of the Meet because of his spectacular performances. Julia Llewellyn ’19 currently holds school records for the 100, 200 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke and 200 IM and consecutive SUNYAC championship titles consequently was names SUNY Oneonta Outstanding Athlete of the Year in 2019.

Schuler came to Oneonta after completing her master's degree in sport psychology in 1997 from Springfield (MA) College. While at Springfield she spent a season as an assistant coach at Elms College. She has proven experience in recruiting and coaching the Div. III student athlete from her stints at Elms and as an assistant at her Alma Mater, Clarkson University.

A 1993 graduate of Clarkson, Schuler was team captain and Most Valuable Swimmer for both the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons. She holds three school records at the University in the backstroke, the breaststroke and the freestyle and received the Outstanding Swimmer Award as a senior.

Schuler is the aquatics director at Oneonta and serves as an instructor within the Sports and Exercise Sciences. Schuler is certified by the American Red Cross in CPR and First Aid and as a Lifeguard Trainer. She also is a certified pool operator and ropes course facilitator for the challenge course at the SUNY Oneonta college camp

She continues to participate in swimming and a pay it forward philosophy. Her overall advice to her athletes is the following ‘Never be afraid to try and fail, be ever so afraid of failing to try’.
