Benjamin Grimm

Entering his 15th season as Head Coach at SUNY Oneonta, Grimm has coached his team to six SUNYAC tournament appearances.  He has coached 33 All-SUNYAC performers, 13 All-New York Region performers, one All Region 3 Defensive Team award winner, the 2025 National Leader in Stolen Bases, an ECAC All-Star, a Don Axtell SUNYAC Pitcher of the Year, a Clark V. Whited SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, a D3baseball.com All-American, has had one player selected in the Major League Baseball first-year player draft and has had six players play or been offered professional contracts.

The 2025 Red Dragons finished 25-17-1, earning a berth in the SUNYAC tournament and advancing to the SUNYAC Tournament Finals, where they finished as conference runners-up and peaked 7th regionally in the NPI rankings. The 2025 Red Dragons had six players earn All-SUNYAC honors. Kyle Roper and Joey Dwyer each earned ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Honors, with Roper also earning D3Baseball.com All-Region Honors. Dwyer also earned All-Region Defensive Team honors and was the National Leader in Stolen Bases with 48. Anthony Foglia and Logan Hutter earned CSC Academic All-District honors for their combined efforts on the field and in the classroom.

The 2023 version of the Red Dragons completed one of the better seasons in recent history, finishing 25-15, with a 3rd place finish in the SUNYAC, and were regionally ranked in multiple NCAA Region 3 polls, peaking at number 7.  The team also set a school record by winning 13 games in row.  Utility player Sean Liquori and Third baseman Jake Barrett earned first team all SUNYAC honors and Starting Pitcher Devin Rooney earned second team all SUNYAC Honors.  Liquori was also recognized as an ABCA/Rawling All Region performer on the third team and Barrett was recognized as a D3Baseball.com All Region performer on the third team.  Thomas Skoczek was also recognized as the SUNYAC Elite 20 performer for baseball, having the highest GPA at the conference championship. Brad Turner and Derek Shea also earned Academic All District Team honors as selected by College Sports Communicators for their combined contributions on the field and their work in the classroom.
 
In the return to the diamond in 2021 following the Covid-19 Outbreak in 2020, the Red Dragon's finished the regular season 11-11 and in second place in the SUNYAC Eastern Division to qualify for the SUNYAC tournament while finishing with 2 wins over top 25 programs.  LHP Mike Losak paced the SUNYAC in Saves and K/9 to earn 2nd Team All SUNYAC and 3rd team ABCA All New York Region Honors.  1B/LHP Sean Liquori was elected as the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year and 2nd Team ALL SUNYAC after finishing among the league leaders in Wins, IP, ERA, all while hitting near .300 for the season.
 
In a shortened 2020 season, the team finished in the top 50 nationally in Stolen Bases per game and Sac Flies and the top 100 nationally in triples, stolen bases, Sac Bunts, HBP, Walks per 9 innings, Double Plays and Double Plays per game. Sean McGlynn finished in the top 50 nationally in SB per game, James Ceparano finished in the top 50 nationally in Walks per game, and Pat McGee finished in the top 50 nationally in Sac Flies. The team also had the 30th ranked SOS in the country when the season was cut short. Mike Losak also earned the SUNYAC Award of Valor.
 
The 2019 team finished third in the SUNYAC tournament and finished in the top 50 nationally in stolen bases and stolen bases per game and the top 100 in triples and triples per game.  Along with that, Rob Ottaviano led the SUNYAC in earned run average while earning All New York Region and All-SUNYAC honors.  Ryan Fay led the SUNYAC in appearances while earning All-SUNYAC honors, Steven Gerringer led the SUNYAC in saves and Mickey Mullins led the SUNYAC in stolen bases per game.
 
The 2018 team finished ranked in the top 50 nationally in hits allowed per 9 Innings, and the top 100 nationally in home runs, home runs per game, ERA, and strikeouts per 9 innings.  Along with that, Takoda Sitar led the SUNYAC in strikeouts per 9 innings and Dom Lamonica led the SUNYAC in home runs.
 
Since arriving at SUNY Oneonta, the baseball team has seen steady success in the classroom.  During this time, over 140 different players have earned SUNYAC Academic honors, 27 players have been inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, four players have earned CSC Academic All-District honors, and one player has won the SUNYAC Elite 20 award.  The team has also been honored nine times with the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award in recognition of a team GPA over 3.0 for the entire school year.

During the summer of 2009, Grimm co-founded the Sherrill Silversmiths collegiate summer baseball team and the Sherrill Athletic Club, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit.  The team competes in the MLB-funded New York Collegiate Baseball League.  After a ten-year hiatus, Grimm returned to the Noyes Park Dugout in 2021 and has been there since. The last three summers have been the best three-year stretch in Silversmiths history, marked by three consecutive 20-win seasons, three straight playoff appearances, and an advancement to within one win of the Eastern Division Title in 2025. In 2024, the Silversmiths Coaching Staff was selected to coach the Eastern Division at the NYCBL All-Star Game, having secured first place at the All-Star Break. At the end of the 2023 season, Grimm was also elected to serve as the President of the franchise for a second time.  In 2021 and 2022, he guided the team to within one game of just the third NYCBL playoff appearance in franchise history.  In his return to Sherrill, he has coached eight players who have signed professional contracts, 20 All-NYCBL performers, four NYCBL Top Prospects, one player selected in the MLB Amateur Draft, and helped tutor Jack Kaloogian, who was named an Uprising Coach in 2021.  In 2011, Sherrill transitioned from the now-defunct ECBL to the NYCBL.  In his first run with the team, Grimm coached three players who signed professional contracts.  He also coached nine ECBL All-Stars, three NYCBL All-Stars, one All-NYCBL performer, and the player who set the NYCBL single-season mark for stolen bases at 62.  He also had the privilege to coach third base during the 2011 NYCBL All-Star game and the 2009 ECBL All-Star game.  
 
Immediately before coming to Oneonta, Coach Grimm served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY for the 2011 season.  In his one season at Hamilton, he helped the pitching staff lower their team ERA by over three runs.  He also helped the team to the longest winning streak in four years.
 
Prior to arriving at Hamilton, he spent three years (2008-2010) as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, WV.  In his three years at D&E, he coached three All-WVIAC pitchers, one All-Atlantic Region pitcher, and saw the school record for career and single season saves, and career appearances broke.  During his time at D&E the pitching staff lowered its team ERA by over three runs, the team increased its win total by 16 from nine in 2008 to 25 in 2010, helped D&E make the WVIAC tournament in 2009, and helped D&E achieve a No. 8 ranking in the Atlantic Region Poll in 2010.  He coached one pitcher that signed a professional contract.
 
In the summer of 2008, Grimm served as an assistant coach with the Haymarket Senators of the Valley League, which is a MLB sponsored collegiate league, in Virginia.  During his one season in Haymarket he helped the team make the Valley League playoffs for the first time in franchise history and coached four players who signed MLB contracts.
 
In 2007, Grimm served as the pitching coach at Cazenovia College. In his one season at Cazenovia he coached one All-NEAC Pitcher and saw the single season record for saves broke.  He helped guide Cazenovia to the NEAC Conference Tournament in 2007.
 
Coach Grimm has also worked many camps and clinics including those at the United States Naval Academy, Mississippi State University, The University of Mississippi, Harvard University, Lafayette University, and Hartford University.
 
Coach Grimm is a 2010 Graduate of West Virginia University with a M.S. Degree in Athletic Coaching Education.
 
In 2006, he received his B.S. in Recreation and Tourism Management from Concord University in Athens, WV.  While at Concord, Grimm pitched two seasons for the Mountain Lions.  He had a combined record of 7-3 in those two seasons while being used primarily as a reliever.  In 2006, he finished 5-3 with one save in 21 appearances for a team that played in the WVIAC Conference Championship game and finished 8th in the Atlantic Region.  He also earned WVIAC Commissioner’s List Honors in his senior season for his work in the classroom.
 
In 2004, he received an A.S. in Recreation Leadership from Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY.  In his two seasons with the Lazers, Grimm was a part of two teams that qualified for the Region III tournament.  In his sophomore season, he led OCC in wins, strikeouts, and opponents’ batting average against. He finished his OCC career with a complete game no hitter against Mercyhurst Northeast in the Region III tournament.
 
During the summer of 2003 Grimm pitched for the Mohawk Valley Cobras of the NYCBL.
 
A 2001 graduate of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central, Grimm lettered in Baseball and Basketball while also playing Legion baseball for Sherrill Post 230.
 
Coach Grimm currently resides in Bainbridge with his wife Megan, and their two children Ellie and Maddox.
