Baseball (9-16/4-3 SUNYAC)

Apr. 11th vs. Oswego, L 1-2
In a game that matched two of the SUNYAC's best left handed pitchers, it was SUNY Oneonta's Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck) that was outdueled last Friday by Oswego's Brendyn Karinchak 2-1.  B Ascher went seven innings and struck out six Oswego batters.

Oswego's scored its runs in the top of the first inning of the game.  Back-to-back triples to open the game gave Oswego a 1-0 lead.

The Lakers pitcher was perfect through the first four innings before a throwing error allowed Oneonta's first base runner to reach.  Senior Christopher Orlando (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) was the beneficiary of the error, as he was able to get to second base to start the fifth.  He then stole third with one out, but was stranded there after a strikeout and a line out.

Freshman catcher, Billy Riedel (East Northport/John Glenn), broke up the no-no by leading off the sixth inning with a sharp single to right field.  Sophomore LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) then laid down a bunt, which was thrown away at first base and allowed the runners to get into scoring position with no outs.

Leadoff hitter Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) then reached on a fielder's choice, which drove in Riedel from third.  Gizzarelli was out on the play.  Kies was then picked off at first base before David Wright (Oneonta/Oneonta) grounded out to second base to end the inning for Oneonta.

Apr. 12th vs. Oswego, L 3-7; W 15-12
SUNY Oneonta and Oswego State combined for 27 runs and 35 hits in game 2 of last Saturday's SUNYAC doubleheader and, fortunately for the host Red Dragons, they came away with a hard fought 15-12 victory to earn a split with the Lakers after dropping game 1 7-3.

Neither team scored in the first inning and Oswego was held scoreless in the fourth, eighth and ninth innings while Oneonta scored at least one run in innings two through eight.

Oswego scored a pair of runs in the top of the second.

Oneonta got one back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a throwing error by the third baseman that allowed Orlando to get to second base.  Sophomore Dylan Stamile (Long Beach, NY/Bowie (Austin, TX)) drove Orlando in with a single down the right field line.

Both teams scored three runs each in its halves of the third inning.  Oneonta tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Kies singled to drive in classmate Riedel from second base with two outs.

Oswego added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead at 7-5.

Oneonta stormed back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs, as the Red Dragons made the Lakers pay for a pair of errors.  Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) reached on an infield single to start the inning before being moved over to second by Orlando.  Stamile then hit a slow roller to the pitcher that he beat out, but the throw went wide, which allowed him to move to second base and Mastroianni to score.  Freshman Wright then singled home Stamile and went to second on the throw home.  Wright went to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by the third baseman.

Both teams scored two runs each in the sixth inning and three runs each in the seventh inning.

Oneonta loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs and scored its first two runs of the inning on a one-out double by freshman Mike Cruz (Levittown/Division Avenue).  The final, and eventual winning run, came in on a sacrifice fly to right field by Orlando.

The Red Dragons added a pair of runs in the home half of the eighth on a ground out by freshman Wayne Baker (Port Washington/Paul D. Schreiber) that brought home junior Nate Eastman (Oneonta/Oneonta) from third after he led off the inning with a single and went to third on a double by Wright.  Wright came into score on an RBI single by sophomore Joe Franke (Livingston Manor/Liberty Central).

Picking up his first win of the season was sophomore John Sica (Albany/Bishop Maginn), who pitched two-thirds of an inning to finish out the seventh.  Wright pitched a perfect ninth inning for Oneonta to earn his first collegiate save.

Stamile was 3-for-3 in game 2 with a pair of runs batted in.  Mastroianni collected three hits while scoring three times.  Eastman, Wright, Riedel and freshman Kies all had two hits.

In the opening game of the day, Oswego scored two runs in the third and sixth innings while adding three more in the seventh inning.  Tim Smith was 4-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead the Lakers offense.

The lone highlight for Oneonta in game 1 was a three-run home run by Kies in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Kyle Jordan (Levittown/Division) pitched 6-2/3 innings allowing seven runs and nine hits, as he fell to 2-2 on the season.

Softball (16-9/6-3 SUNYAC)

Apr. 11th at New Paltz, L 0-3; I 6-3 (suspended in bottom 3rd)
The SUNY Oneonta softball team traveled to New Paltz and got tripped up in the first game 3-0 last Friday. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in the third inning with the Red Dragons in the lead 6-3 due to rain and darkness.

In the opening game of the afternoon, New Paltz got two runs in the second inning and an insurance run in the fifth to defeat Oneonta.

The Red Dragons had an opportunity in the first inning to get on the board when they loaded the bases on a hit batter and singles by Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) and Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland), but were unable to bring a run across. For the game, Oneonta left seven runners on base.

Oneonta got started early in game two as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) had a lead-off single and moved to second on a sacrifice bun by Jennifer Brocco (Kingston/Kingston). Lichtenstein doubled to bring Whittam home and would score on a fielding error. Rivera scored the third run of the inning on a Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) triple.

The Hawks would get one run back before Oneonta scored three more in the second to make it 6-1. The Red Dragons forced two pitching changes by New Paltz in the inning. Five hits and one error would allow the three runs to come in. Brianna Calby (South Huntington/Walt Whitman), Brocco, Lictenstein, Rivera and Cuevas each had singles to do the damage.

Apr. 13th at Brockport, W 2-0; L 3-5
Freshman Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) picked up her eighth win of the season with a complete game shutout in game one of the doubleheader at Brockport last Sunday. The Red Dragons split the afternoon series, taking game one 2-0 before falling in the second game 5-3.

DeAngelis and her counterpart, Korey Kibling, pitched solid games, each going the distance for their respective teams. DeAngelis pitched her seventh complete game and second shutout of the season. Both pitchers allowed five hits while DeAngelis struck out two batters.

Both teams struggled to get their offenses going in game one. The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth where Oneonta was able to put two runs on the board.

Lichtenstein singled to center field and advanced to third after a walk to Rivera and single by Cuebas. Brocco would drive in both runs when she doubled to center field.

In the bottom of the seventh, Brockport had bases loaded, but could not find the answer they needed to score any runs.

Brocco went 2-for-3 in the first game.

In game two, Brockport came out early with offensive power scoring four runs after the first inning.

Oneonta cut the Golden Eagles lead to two in the top of the third inning. Whittam up the middle and advanced to second on a Brocco single. Lichtenstein would bring Whittam around on a fielder's choice. Cuevas would single in the second run as the Red Dragons scored two runs on five big hits.

In the top of the fifth Oneonta was able to cut the Brockport lead to just one run after a Cuevas sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore).

However, Brockport would go back up two on a homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Rivera and Whittam each had a pair of hits in game two and Cuevas had a pair of runs batted in.
