Junior
Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck) continued his dominance last Saturday, as he recorded his second consecutive shutout against No. 3 Kean University. He now has 39 strikeouts in 26.2 innings this spring and has lowered his ERA to 2.36.
Oneonta scored all the runs they would need to seize control of this game in the second inning. Powered by a three-run home run off the bat of junior
Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem), the Red Dragons would push across six runs. It was Mastroianni's first collegiate round-tripper, as he is currently hitting .425, which is over 100 points higher than his .300 career average entering the 2014 season.
All of Oneonta's runs in the second inning came with two outs. Junior
Jon Halligan (Cornwallville/Cairo Durham) got things started with a double to left center, which was followed by an RBI single off the bat of freshman
Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal). Sophomore
LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy)then singled, which allowed Mullins to get to third for freshman
David Wright (Apalachin/Vestal), who singled Mullins home with the second run of the inning. Freshman
David Wright (Oneonta/Oneonta) then drove in Gizzarelli with a single through the left side.
Mastroianni then deposited a ball over the left field fence to cap the inning for Oneonta.
A bit of two-out magic in the eighth inning gave Oneonta two more runs to increase its lead to 8-0. Sophomore
Dylan Stamile (Long Beach, NY/Bowie (Austin, TX)) led off the inning with a double and went to third base on a wild pitch. Halligan drew a two-out walk and stole second to give the Red Dragons a pair in scoring position for Gizzarelli, who then singled through the right side, which scored Stamile. Halligan came in behind Stamile thanks to an error on the catcher.
In Saturday's second game, a seven-run second inning by Montclair State powered them to a 10-1 win. Oneonta had only five hits in the game including two by Kies. Kies scored the Red Dragons' lone run in the first inning when he scored on a double by senior
