Mar. 17th vs. Rowan, L 5-23
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team continued its spring trip to Florida and came up short against Franklin & Marshall 12-10 in a slugfest.  The two teams combined for 30 hits in the nine-inning game, which saw Oneonta collect 14 of them.

Oneonta found itself in a six-run hole in the game entering the bottom of the second inning.  The Diplomats touched up starter, Mickey Silberfeld(Point Lookout/Long Beach), for six runs on seven hits in the top of the inning.  Silberfeld lasted only three innings, as he allowed eight runs on 11 hits while recording three strikeouts.

Oneonta got a run back in the bottom of the second when freshman Billy Riedel (East Northport/John Glenn) hit an RBI single to right field that drove in junior Mike Cruz (Levittown/Division Avenue), who walked to start the inning before being moved to second by Jon Halligan (Cornwallville/Cairo Durham).  Reidel collected three hits in the game for Oneonta.

After two more runs in the top of the third by F&M, the Red Dragons scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to close the gap to 8-4.  Freshman Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) scored the first run when Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) drove him in from second on a single to left field.  Mastroianni finished the game with three hits and a career high four runs batted in.

Mastroianni then stole second, went to third on an infield single by Christopher Orlando (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley), and scored on a single by David Wright (Oneonta/Oneonta).  Orlando came in to score on a double play turned by the Diplomats.

Oneonta trailed 11-4 entering the bottom of the fifth inning.  In the inning, Mastroianni knocked in his second run of the game with a single to right center field that drove in Kies, who had reached on an error before stealing second and third base.  Mastroianni scored on a wild pitch.

A single run for Oneonta in the sixth and a single run for F&M in the top of the seventh made the score 12-7 entering the bottom of the eighth inning where the Red Dragons scored its final three runs of the contest.  Reidel began the inning with a double down the left field line.  Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck) came in to pinch run and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a single by LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy).

Kies followed with a double to put runners at second and third for Oneonta.  Mastroianni drove in Gizzarelli from third with an RBI single before Kies was driven in with a sacrifice fly by Orlando.

Against SUNY Canton, the Red Dragons dropped the opener, 12-1, but bounced back in the nightcap, 7-4.  Oneonta collected 11 hits in game 2 including the second home run of the season for the Red Dragons off the bat of Orlando.

SUNY Canton plated three runs in the top of the first and carried its lead into the fourth before the Red Dragons finally got on the scoreboard with a single run in the home half of the inning.  Oneonta then added three runs in each of the next two innings to take the win.

Orlando led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot for his first round-tripper of 2014.  Orlando finished the game with three hits and two runs batted in.

Textbook baseball led to the first run of the fifth inning, as Halligan singled to lead off the inning and then was sacrificed to second by Gizzarelli.  Halligan then scored on an RBI single by Kies.  Kies had three hits in the game as well for Oneonta.

Kies scored the second run of the fifth after stealing second and coming around to score on a single to right field by Mastroianni.  Mastroianni scored on an RBI single by Orlando after moving to second base on a passed ball.

The Red Dragons loaded the bases in the sixth with no outs thanks to an error, a hit batsman, and a single by Halligan.  The first two runs came home on a single to center field by Gizzarelli.  Gizzarelli scored the final run of the inning on a fielder's choice.

Freshman Robert Marks (Brooklyn/Brooklyn Technical) picked up his first collegiate win going the distance with six strikeouts.  Marks allowed eight hits and four runs over the seven innings.

In the first game of the day, SUNY Canton jumped out to an 11-1 lead after three innings, which included a seven-run first inning.  Wright, who had a double in the game, had two of Oneonta's five hits.

Lichtenstein doubled to left center bringing home Whittam who had singled to get on base. Brocco then laced her second double to right center, bringing home two more runs to give the Red Dragons a 9-0 lead after 2 innings.

Juniors Nichole Paolino (Catskill/Catskill) and Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) and Brocco would all pick up doubles in the fourth inning and sophomore Brianna Calby (South Huntington/Walt Whitman) had a single as the Red Dragons took a 13-0 lead.

With two outs in the first, Lichtenstein singled up the middle and scored on a Rivera triple to right field. Marzillo would follow it up with a single through the left side scoring Rivera and would score herself on an O'Gorman single to right field.

The defense would step it up a notch in the third and fourth innings as the Regents would load the bases in each, but were held scoreless.

Rockford loaded the bases in the third on a walk, error and single with just one out. Oneonta's starting pitcher, Hitt, closed out the inning by getting the next batter to pop up to shortstop, Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham), and the final batter to ground the ball back to her for the easy toss to first.

With the fourth starting similar to the third, the Regents loaded the bases with one out on two of their seven hits and a walk. Again, Cuevas had a hand in the next two outs as she caught a foul pop fly for out number two and assisted on the third out by fielding a grounder and throwing the ball to teammate Whittam for the third

Four hits and two errors allowed the Red Dragons to score four in the bottom of the fourth to close out the game. Lichtenstein, Marzillo and Graham each had singles and Rivera doubled.

Hitt earned her second win of the season, allowing five hits and striking out four in the process.

Lichtenstein went a perfect 3-for-3 and Whittam, Rivera, Marzillo, O'Gorman and Cuevas each had two hits in the game. Rivera also added two runs batted in.

Mar. 14th vs. Curry, L 1-2 (8); vs. Nichols, W 5-1
The SUNY Oneonta softball team improved to 5-3 overall after splitting the doubleheader, falling in an eight-inning thriller to Curry College 2-1 and defeating Nichols College 5-1.

Junior pitcher Hitt was red hot on the mound as she struck out twelve batters and allowed two hits and one earned run. The run came in the seventh inning to break up a no-hitter as Hitt earned her third win of the season against the Bison Pride of Nichols.

Oneonta began the game by scoring two runs in the top of the first.  Whittam started the inning by reaching base on an error by the third baseman. Brocco and Lichtenstein would move the runner with back-to-back singles before Rivera singled to the shortstop, bringing Whittam home. Brocco would cross the plate on the next batter on a Marzillo sacrifice fly to left field.

The Red Dragons would plate two more in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead. With two outs, Oneonta had four consecutive singles to bring home the two runs. Sophomores Calby Foster started it with back-to-back singles through the right side and left side, respectively. Whittam and Brocco would each bring them home on singles of their own to opposite fields.

Oneonta would tack on one more run in the top of the seventh. Rivera led off with a double to center field. After a foul out and ground out, freshman O’Gorman laced her first collegiate triple to right field to score Krystn Neroda, who pinch ran for Rivera.

Rivera finished the Nichols game with three hits and Brocco, Calby and Foster each added a pair.

In the opening game of the day, Curry College won a thriller in the eighth inning as they defeated the Red Dragons 2-1.

After the third inning, the game was tied at 1-1. Curry got on the board in the top of their inning and Oneonta responded by plating one in the bottom of the inning. Calby started the inning off after getting on base because of an error. Whittam advanced Calby to third on a bunt that was mishandled by the first baseman. Brocco singled to bring Calby home.

Oneonta would leave six runners on base over the last five innings.

Freshman DeAngelis struck out nine batters, four looking at the third strike, in the loss.

Mar. 15th vs. UMass-Dartmouth, W 3-2; vs. Pitt-Bradford, W 2-0 (9)
The SUNY Oneonta softball team took two more wins last Saturday, both in thrilling fashion, as they held off UMass-Dartmouth's late game rally and took Pittsburgh-Bradford to the ninth inning before winning the game.

In the opening game of the day against the Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth, the Red Dragons tied the game at 1 apiece after the Corsairs got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Kristyn Neroda (Pearl River/Pearl River) entered the game as a pinch hitter in the fourth and laced a double to get the inning started. After a pop-up, freshman O’Gorman singled to bring Neroda home.

Oneonta would add two more in the top of the fifth to take the lead 3-1. With two outs, Neroda got on base due to a fielding error by the Corsairs third baseman. Junior Marzillo stepped up to the plate and belted a long triple to score Neroda. Marzillo would come home on the next batter, O'Gorman, as she reached on the second error of the inning.

Umass-Dartmouth would get one run in the bottom of the seventh to close the game to 3-2 after a walk and double. The base runner would advance to third on fielder's choice and then the excitement ensued. Oneonta catcher, Rivera, threw down to third baseman Brocco, who tagged the runner as she had got caught off too far from the bag for the second out of the inning. Starting pitcher DeAngelis, who earned her third win of the year, got the final batter to strike out looking to secure the victory.

DeAngelis pitched the entire game, allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out eight batters.

Marzillo and Cuevas each had a pair of hits in the game.

The second game of the day was all about pitching and defense. Oneonta's Hitt and Bradford's Sidney Mosby found themselves in a pitcher's duel as the two pitched a scoreless game through seven innings before the Red Dragon's bats came alive in the eighth.

Oneonta led off the ninth inning with a double to center field by Rivera, scoring Brocco, who started as the runner at second base due to the international run rule. Cuevas would bring home the insurance run as she singled to bring Rivera home for 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the inning.

Hitt finished the game with a strike out of the first batter and getting the next two to ground out to second base and pop up to the shortstop. Hitt struck out seven batters and allowed six hits in earning her fourth victory of the year.

Mar. 16th vs. Clarkson, W 7-0; vs. Wooster, W 7-6 (9)
Top of Form
The SUNY Oneonta closed out its Florida trip with two final wins to go 7-1 in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The wins improved their record to 9-3 overall, the best start for the Red Dragons since the 2003 season where they also started with a 9-3 record.

The first game of the day pitted Oneonta against another New York state team, the Golden Knights of Clarkson. The Red Dragons defeated Clarkson 7-0, plating four runs in the third and three more in the sixth.

Freshman pitcher DeAngelis had another stellar outing as she allowed just one hit and struck out ten batters in six innings of work before handing the reins over to classmate Anna Husain (Mayfield/Mayfield), who preserved the shut out for Oneonta.

Oneonta's bats came alive in the bottom of the third inning as they were able to get on the scoreboard. The Red Dragons picked up four runs thanks to a two-run single from Marzillo and a run-scoring hit from Cuevas. With runners on first and third, Cuevas got in rundown and stuck in it long enough to allow Marzillo to cross home for the fourth run.

Clarkson looked as if it may score a run in the top of the fourth, but mistakes saw two runners erased on the base paths. Oneonta's defense held strong as the Golden Knights would only have one more base runner for the remainder of the game.

Oneonta picked up three more runs in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Calby. After a Nicole Brieva (Kings Park/Kings Park) walk, Brieva stole second and Calby would steal home for the second run of the inning. Whittam would follow with a single to left field to bring Brieva around to score.

In the last game to be played in Florida, Oneonta would go nine innings, their third extra-inning game in as many days, to defeat the College of Wooster 7-6.

Oneonta would take a 2-0 after the top of the second. With two outs, Calby had a bunt single and then stole second. Paolino doubled to left center to bring Calby home. After a Foster single, Whittam would single to center field to get Paolino across for the second run.

Wooster would tie the game up a 2-2 in the bottom of the inning.

Oneonta would add two more runs, one in the fourth and fifth inning to take 4-2 lead. Paolino hit a sacrifice fly deep to center field to bring home O’Gorman, who walked, advanced on a wild pitch and moved to third on a ground out. In the fifth Rivera singled to center field, Marzillo followed with the same and Cuevas walked to load the bases. O'Gorman would bring Rivera home with a single up the middle.

The Fighting Scots would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh to send it to extra innings. Each team would score a single run in the eighth inning. With the international run rule, O'Gorman, who was the last batter of the previous inning was placed on second. O'Gorman would score on the first Oneonta batter as Paolino singled to center field.

The top of the ninth started with Brieva pinch running for Rivera, as she was the last batter of the eighth. Marzillo chose the right moment to pick up her third hit of the game as she roped a triple to right center field to bring home Brieva. O'Gorman singled through the left side to bring the second run home in Marzillo.

With the score at 7-5, Wooster would bring their runner on second home with two ground outs to cut the lead to 1. After a walk and a single, DeAngelis was able to get the final batter to strike out swinging.

Whittam and Marzillo each had three hits, while O'Gorman and Paulino had a pair. O'Gorman also scored two runs and had two runs batted in.

Oneonta is now off for close to two weeks before they open up SUNYAC conference play when they travel to SUNY Geneseo for a doubleheader on March 28, game time is set for 3 p.m.

Men’s Lacrosse (1-6/0-0 SUNYAC)

Mar. 15th vs. Elizabethtown, L 6-7
A goal post was all that stood in the way of a game-tying goal, as the SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team lost a tough, 7-6, decision to Elizabethtown at home.  Sophomore Devon Casey (Garden City/Kellenberg) took a feed from senior Daniel Stern (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) and rifled a shot that hit the left post and deflected out where Elizabethtown was able to secure the ground ball, but then turned it over as they were trying to kill the clock.  The Red Dragons had one final shot by Stern, but it went wide with two seconds remaining.  The Blue Jays were awarded the ball and sent the ball long to the other end of the field as time expired.

Elizabethtown was in control early, as they built themselves a 3-0 lead entering the second quarter, who converted on five shots in the opening 15 minutes.

In the second quarter, the two teams exchanged goals for a halftime score of 4-1 in favor of the Blue Jays.  Stern scored for Oneonta to get the Red Dragons on the scoreboard with six seconds to go in the quarter.

After a goal by Jimmy Waters at 9:34 of the third quarter gave the Blue Jays a 5-1 lead, the momentum shifted to Oneonta, as they ripped off four straight goals over span of 3:31 to tie the game at 5-5.

Sophomore Connor Coyle (Centerport/Harborfields) got things rolling with an unassisted goal at 8:13.  He was followed eight seconds later by junior Matthew Knapp (Holtsville/Sachem East), who won the faceoff and went right to the goal where he put a shot by the goalie to make the score 5-3.

Then it was sophomore Kevin Theofield (East Northport/Northport) who scored back-to-back goals to complete the comeback for Oneonta.  Casey, who got the ball to Theofield on a restart after a failed clear by the Blue Jays, assisted Theofield's second goal.

Elizabethtown scored back-to-back within a minute of each other to put Elizabethtown back up by a pair of goals entering the fourth quarter.

The lone goal in the fourth quarter was scored unassisted by sophomore Michael Metzger (Colonie/Colonie), who brought Oneonta one goal closer to 7-6.

Mar. 19th vs. Ithaca, L 6-15
The No. 11 Ithaca Bombers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter en route to a 15-6 victory last Wednesday against host SUNY Oneonta in nonconference men's lacrosse action.

Oneonta scored the opening goal of the second quarter, as sophomore Taylor Kalbacher (Syosset/Syosset) notched his first goal of the season unassisted.

Ithaca went up 8-1 with 1:43 left in the quarter on back-to-back goals.

Coyle got one back for the Red Dragons 32 seconds later before the Bombers scored with 17 seconds to go in the quarter to give the Bombers a 9-2 lead at halftime.

Ithaca scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 13-2 lead.

Trailing 14-3 entering the fourth quarter, Oneonta put up three goals including the first collegiate goal for freshman Matthew Mazzie (East Meadow/Kellenberg) that made the score 15-6 with 20 seconds to go in the game.

Kevin Fitzpatrick (Rocky Point/Rocky Point) made seven saves for Oneonta after entering the game at the start of the second quarter.
