Men’s Indoor Track & Field
Mar. 7th & 8th at ECAC Championships, T-3rd place with 41 points
In its final tune-up prior to this weekend's NCAA Division III championships, the SUNY Oneonta men's track & field team competed in the ECAC championships last Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, Mass. The Red Dragons scored 41 points overall and finished in a tie for third place in the team standings. The overall team champion was Bates College, who scored 47 points.
The highlight for the Red Dragons was a first place finish by the 4x400m relay, as the squad captured its second title in the event, the first since 2009. In 2009, that foursome would go on to capture the program's first NCAA title.
The relay foursome included sophomores
Joe Carr (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake),
Micah Patterson (Plattsburgh/Saranac) and
Thomas Wheeler (Rocky Point/Rocky Point) along with freshman
Mike Engesser (Medford, NY/Longwood). The quartet ran a time of 3:19.60, which was one-half second faster than the second place foursome from Coast Guard.
Carr is currently ninth on the Division III performance list in the 200m dash and is looking solid to qualify for the national meet next weekend.
Engesser also earned All-ECAC honors in the 500m run with a third place finish. He ran a personal best time of 1:06.11 in the event.
As has been the case all winter long, juniors
J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) and
Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus) once again had solid performances in the throws. Both are in line to qualify for the NCAA championship meet this weekend. Roth is currently in the top-10 in both the shot put and weight throw while Weinert is at No. 15 in the weight throw. The NCAA will take the top-15 declared athletes based on performance.
In the meet, Roth earned a pair of All-ECAC honors with his third place finish in the shot put and his second place finish in the weight throw. Weinert earned All-ECAC honors with his third place finish in the weight throw. He also finished ninth in the shot put.
The final individual top-8 finish went to sophomore
Jake Alviene (East Greenbush/Columbia), who came in fourth place in the 200m dash in a time of 22.17. Alviene also finished 11th in the 60m hurdles, which is the event he is hoping to make a return trip to the NCAA championships to compete in.
The last top-10 finisher for Oneonta was junior
Charles Remillard (Peru/Peru), who ran a season best time of 8:42.57 in finishing ninth in the 3000m run.
Women’s Indoor Track & Field
Mar. 7th & 8th at the ECAC Championships, 8th place with 27 points
The SUNY Oneonta women's track & field team completed the indoor portion of its year-long schedule last Saturday at the ECAC Division III championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, Mass. The Red Dragons came away with an eighth place finish overall with 27 points. The overall team championship went to Amherst College, who scored 38 points.
Individually, Oneonta had four top-8 finishes including two by senior
Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus). Overall, three individuals and two relays earned All-ECAC honors.
Kennedy's best finish came in the 3000m run where she ran a personal best time of 10:08.96 to capture second place. On Friday, she ran 17:45.48 to place fourth in the 5000m run.
The other two individuals to earn All-ECAC honors for the Red Dragons were seniors
Brittany Cocchieri (Airmont/Suffern) and
Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip). Cocchieri also was part of the two relays that finished in the top-8 as well.
Cocchieri was fourth in the 200m dash in a time of 25.58. She ran the leadoff leg for the 4x200m relay which came in fourth place and 4x400m relay which came in eighth place. Both relays recorded season best times.
Brandt earned her honor with a sixth place finish in the 200m dash, as she ran a time of 25.76. She also finished 28th in the 60m dash with a time of 8.04.
Junior
Amanda Knox (Gloversville/Goversville) and freshman
Carrie Small (Rockland County/North Rockland) were part of both relays while sophomore
Kashique Robinson (White Plains/Woodlands) rounded out the 4x200m relay and junior
Chelsea Christonikos (New City/Clarkstown South) completed the 4x400m relay foursome.
Men’s Lacrosse (1-4/0-0 SUNYAC)
Mar. 8th at RPI, L 7-9
The SUNY Oneonta men’s lacrosse team fell on the road to Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitute (RPI) 9-7 last Saturday.
RPI got on the board first with an unassisted shot at 12:02. Oneonta responded at 9:27 with a tally from
Kevin Theofield (East Northport/Northport). RPI netted a second goala at 8:01 to put the Engineers back on top. However, the Red Dragons would tie the game at 2-2 on an unassisted goal by
Connor Coyle (Centerport/Harborfields). RPI did not back down, taking back a one-goal advantage with just 17 seconds to play in the quarter on Finn's first tally of the game.
The Red Dragons knotted the game up for a third time to start the second, as
Michael Metzger (Colonie/Colonie) scored at 9:12. The Engineers responded at 7:37 to take the lead that they wouldn't relinquish. An RPI goal on a man-up opportunity pushed the Engineer lead to 5-3. Oneonta cut the lead back to one on an extra-man opportunity of its own with 2:44 remaining, as
Anthony Laureano (Holtsville/Sachem East) took an assist from
Josh Heller (Plainview/Plainview JFK) at 2:44.
Rensselaer scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 7-4 advantage. Laureano netted his second of the day for the Red Dragons at 9:06, but RPI scored at 5:47 to set the score at 8-5 after three.
Oneonta scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter including the final goal of the game at 7:33 by Coyle. Early in the fourth, Theofield passed off to
Devon Casey (Garden City/Kellenberg), who scored to make the score 8-6 at 12:17.
RPI outshot the Red Dragons, 50-31, getting 17 shots in each of the first two quarters. The Engineers also held a 30-24 advantage in ground balls, and won 11-of-19 faceoffs.
Justin Benigno (Massapequa/St. John the Baptist) recorded a career high 15 stops for the Red Dragons.
Mar. 11th at Hartwick, W 9-5
The Hartwick and SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse teams were deadlocked at 5-5 heading into the final quarter, but the visiting Red Dragons outscored the Hawks 4-0 in the fourth period to come away with a 9-5 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Wright Stadium.
The game was tight for over three quarters of play despite the Red Dragons outshooting the Hawks by a wide margin. It was 'Wick that had the upper hand early on as Hartwick got on the board first with an unassisted goal 32 seconds into the contest. The Hawks would go up 2-0 at 8:41 into the game.
Sophomore
Metzger scored at 1:28 to pull Oneonta to within one goal at the end of the first quarter.
Oneonta tied the game up 43 seconds into the second stanza on a goal from
Coyle. Midway through the period, the Red Dragons'
Heller scored unassisted to put the Red Dragons ahead 3-2 at 7:29.
'Wick responded with 4:53 left in the quarter when a Hawk found the back of the net to even the game at 3-all. A slashing penalty on the Red gave the Hawks a man-up opportunity. Hartwick cashed to give the Hawks back the lead, 4-3. It would be a short-lived advantage as
Theofield with 3:46 remaining to even the contest at 4-4 going into halftime.
Oneonta went ahead 5-4 with 9:07 showing on the game clock in the third period. The lead would stay in the visitor's favor until the 2:36 mark. A penalty on the Red Dragons gave 'Wick another man-up situation. The Hawks made good to knot it up at 5-5.
Two penalties at the end of the third stanza put the Red Dragons in an extra-man opportunity. The Hawks successfully killed off the penalty to keep the score tied up. Oneonta, however, would take the lead for good on Theofield's second score of the afternoon at 13:16 of the fourth quarter. Goals from Coyle,
Casey and Heller added to the lead, as the Red Dragons held the Hawks scoreless in the last period to win the game.
Benigno stopped seven shots for Oneonta.
O-State led in shots, 58-24, and in ground balls, 35-22.
Women’s Lacrosse (5-0/0-0 SUNYAC)
Mar. 8th at Marywood, W 18-9
The No. 17 SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse remained undefeated on the season with its 18-9 win at Marywood University last Saturday.
Oneonta put this game out of reach in the opening 20 minutes of the contest with eight unanswered goals. Two goals each by juniors
Nicole Boylan (Massapequa/Massapequa),
Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) and
Michelle Genovese (West Islip/West Islip) and sophomore
Catherine Clark (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) gave the Red Dragons a commanding lead. McNally and Boylan would finish the game with three goals apiece while McNally added two assists for a five point game. Boylan had one assist for four points on the day.
Oneonta led 11-3 at halftime and outscored Marywood, 7-6, in the second half for the final margin of victory. Sophomore
Allison McClain (Wantagh/Wantagh) scored two of her three goals in the second half while senior
Chelsea Collins (St. James/Smithtown East) recorded two of her game high four assists in the final half of play.
Sophomore
Amanda Reichardt (Kings Park/Kings Park) played the first half and made two saves in goal. Senior
Laura Grose (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) and sophomore
Frankie Wilson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) split the second half and combined to make a pair of saves. Reichardt picked up her fifth win of the season.
Senior
Casey Sarle (West Islip/West Islip) led Oneonta with four draw controls while junior
Marissa Makar (Yorktown/Yorktown) led the defense with four caused turnovers.
Baseball (1-4/0-0 SUNYAC)
Mar. 9th at Johns Hopkins, L 7-18; L 3-6
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team nearly pulled off a split of a doubleheader last Sunday with No. 20 Johns Hopkins, but a ninth inning rally fell short in a 6-3 loss in the second game. The Red Dragons dropped the day's first game 18-7, as the two teams squared off at the Cal Ripken Baseball Complex in Aberdeen, MD.
Oneonta trailed 6-1 entering the final inning of game two before putting some hits together to score a pair of runs for the final. The inning started with a triple to right center field by freshman
David Wright (Oneonta/Oneonta). Senior Chris Orlando then singled through the left side to drive in Wright. Orlando went to second on a single through the right side by
Nate Eastman (Oneonta/Oneonta) before heading to third on a flight out to left field by freshman
Billy Riedel (East Northport/John Glenn). Orlando scored on an infield single by junior
Jon Halligan (Cornwallville/Cairo Durham). Hopkins relief pitcher, Justin Drechsel, struck out the next two batters to close out the game and pick up his first save of the season.
Hopkins carried a 3-0 lead into the sixth before Oneonta scored its first run of the game. With one out, freshman
Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) reached on an infield hit. He then stole second and third base before coming home on a single up the middle by leadoff batter
Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem).
Junior
Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) went six innings allowing eight hits and four runs, three earned, while striking out two in the loss.
In the opening game, Hopkins ripped open a 2-2 score with seven runs in the fourth inning. They added one in the fifth, four in the sixth and four more runs in the seventh en route to the lopsided win.
Oneonta did add four runs in their half of the ninth inning, as they collected 11 hits in the game.
The Red Dragons scored single runs in the first, third and eighth innings. Kies and sophomore first baseman,
Dylan Stamile (Long Beach, NY/Bowie (Austin, TX)), each had two hits in the game. Each hitter had a double in the game.
Junior
Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck) only made it through the fourth inning on the mound for Oneonta. Three fielding errors led to five unearned runs in the game. Ascher recorded six strikeouts in his four innings of work.
