Weekly Sports Update - Feb. 7, 2014

Men’s Basketball (9-11/6-7 SUNYAC)

Freshman Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) tied his season high with 25 points to lead the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to an 81-77 victory last Saturday at SUNY Potsdam.  The win for Oneonta allowed them to leave the North Country with a weekend split, as last night the Red Dragons lost at Plattsburgh, 77-54.

Oneonta had four players in double figures on Saturday including two with 20+ points.  Junior Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) scored 23 points while senior Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) and sophomore Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) each scored 11 points.

Saturday's game was won at the foul line for the Red Dragons, as they outscored Potsdam 27-11, from the charity stripe.  The Red Dragons made 27-of-34 free throws in the game while the Bears converted 11-of-14.  McElroy led all shooters with 10 free throws followed by Mager and Lee who both made eight free throws.  Lee was a perfect 8-for-8.  Oneonta made 7-of-8 down the stretch to secure the win.

Oneonta took a 44-37 lead into halftime thanks to 12 points by McElroy and 11 points each by Mager and Zuvic.  The Bears made a run in the first five minutes of the second half before the Red Dragons built themselves a 10-point lead with less than 12 minutes to go in the game.

Last night against Plattsburgh, Oneonta fell behind early and couldn't get back into the game, falling by 23 points.  McElroy was the only player to reach double figures with 10 points.

Women’s Basketball (15-5/9-4 SUNYAC)

Exactly one week after overcoming a 19-point deficit to defeat SUNY Geneseo, the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team turned another 19-point deficit into a five-point win last Saturday.  The day's victim was SUNY Potsdam, who led by 19 points with just over 18 minutes remaining in the game.  Senior Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) scored a season high 19 points to lead the Red Dragons second half surge that saw them score a season high 50 points in the second half.  Schilling also added a team high eight rebounds while dishing out three assists.

Senior Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) and junior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) contributed 15 points and 11 points respectively.

The turning point in the contest came at the 15:35 mark of the second half when sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) made a layup, which started a run of 18 unanswered points that gave Oneonta (14-5/8-4 SUNYAC) a 42-41 lead at the 8:38 mark.


Potsdam regained the lead momentarily at 46-42 before Oneonta took the lead for good with an 18-5 run that gave them its largest lead of the game at 60-51 with 2:34 remaining in the game.

The Bears did get as close as four points in the final minute of play, but the Red Dragons made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch including 4-of-4 by Crawford.
 
Feb. 4th at Oswego, W 63-51
Senior Schilling led four players in double figures last Tuesday evening with 17 points, as the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team defeated Oswego 63-51. 

Oneonta trailed only twice in the night's game, both times coming in the opening minute of each half.  Otherwise, the Red Dragons were in control of the contest, leading by 14 points with just under 10 minutes to go in the second half.  The Red Dragons pulled away from Oswego with an 18-6 run over a nine-minute span and then cruised for the final seven minutes of the game.

Schilling added a team high six assists and six steals in 31 minutes of action.  Junior Longto scored 12 points while senior Crawford and sophomore Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) contributed 10 points each.

Freshman Brianna Spector (Philadelphia, PA/Upper Dublin) collected eight rebounds to go with five points and a pair of blocks off the bench.

Oneonta shot 46 percent from the field and out rebounded Oswego 39-35.
 
Men’s Swimming & Diving (6-2)
 
Feb. 1st vs. Cortland, W 131-104
The SUNY Oneonta men's swimming and diving team defeated visiting SUNY Cortland last Saturday afternoon 134-104, making it three consecutive years to do so. The win improves their dual meet record to 6-2. The team now has almost two weeks as they prepare for the SUNYAC Championships that begin February 19th, hosted by Erie C.C. in Buffalo.

The 200-yard Medley Relay foursome set the tone for the afternoon by breaking a pool record in the event. The quartet of seniors Ryan Walsh (Wingdale/Arlington) and John Rein (Holbrook/Sachem North), junior Colton Roe (Middletown/Pine Bush) and freshman Conor Kelly (Staten Island/Saint Peter's) swam a 1:37.75, over three seconds faster than the old record set back in 2011.

Walsh and Roe would also win individual events in taking the 100-yard butterfly and 100 yard freestyle, respectively.

Lucas Santiago (Amsterdam/Amsterdam) won the 200-yard intermediate medley while Kevin Flessa (Middletown/Middletown) took first in the 100-yard backstroke.

Senior diver Jermaine Miller (Elmira/Southside) continues to shine on the board as he hit the NCAA qualifying score for 11 dives.
 
Women’s Swimming & Diving (5-3)
 
Feb. 1st vs. Cortland, L 107-130
Four pool records fell last Saturday afternoon as the women's swimming and diving team got tripped up by visiting SUNY Cortland in a dual meet, 130-107.

Highlighting the afternoon was the performance by sophomore Lauren Zentko (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) as she broke the first pool record as well as set a new school record for the women in the 1000-yard freestyle event. Her time of 10:50.59 was six seconds faster than the previous pool record that was set last weekend by Chelsea Allocco of New Paltz. The time was also three seconds faster than the old school record that belonged to Zentko, set it back in November.

Zentko would also win two more individual events, the 200 yard intermediate medley and the 500 yard freestyle.

The quartet of Carly Cahill (Troy/Troy), Kristin Higgins (Queensbury/Glens Falls), Alexxa Poliachik (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) and Sarah Greco (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) also set a new pool record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The old record was set back in 2011 by a group from Cortland.

Sophomore Taylor Waldrop (Fairport/Fairport) won the 200-yard freestyle.
 
Men’s Indoor Track & Field
 
Feb. 1st at Kane Invitational at Cornell University
The SUNY Oneonta men's track & field team competed last Saturday at the Kane Invitational hosted by Cornell University.  Many season best performances were turned in that allowed individual athletes to move up nationally in Division III in their respective events.  The national performance lists are used to determine who will compete at the NCAA Division III championships in mid-March.

Leading the Red Dragons on the track yesterday were a pair of sophomores, as Joe Carr (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Jake Alviene (East Greenbush/Columbia) had season best performances in their events.  Carr made his marks in the 60m and 200m dashes while Alviene moved up in the 60m hurdles.

Carr won the 200m with a time of 22.26, which once converted, became 21.87, which moved him into second nationally.  His time is currently the fastest in the SUNYAC and ECAC.  Carr's performance in the 60m was a season best time of 7.08, which placed him third in the event.

Alviene won the hurdles with a season best time of 8.25.  His time elevated him into the No. 10 spot nationally along with moving to the top of the SUNYAC.

In the field events, junior J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) was the big performer in yesterday's competition.  Roth soared past the 18-meter mark in winning the 35-lb. weight throw.  His heave of 18.24m (59'-10.25") was a personal best throw and moved him into the seventh spot nationally, right behind teammate Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus).
 
Women’s Indoor Track & Field
 
Feb. 1st at Kane Invitational at Cornell University
The SUNY Oneonta women's track & field team competed last Saturday at the Kane Invitational hosted by Cornell University.  Many season best performances were turned in that allowed individual athletes to qualify for the ECAC Division III championships in early March.

Leading the Red Dragons on the track yesterday was senior Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip), who turned in a pair of ECAC qualifying performances yesterday.  Brandt was 10th in the 60m dash with a season best time of 8.05.  She was ninth in the 200m dash with a time of 26.72.  Brandt's time in the 60m has her in the fifth spot in the SUNYAC while her time in the 200m has her third overall currently.

Junior Jaclyn Masucci (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) and freshman Carrie Small (Rockland County/North Rockland) also turned in ECAC qualifying times in their events.  Masucci was sixth overall in the 1,000m run with an ECAC time of 3:07.31.  Small was fifth overall in the 500m dash with an ECAC qualifying mark of 1:21.98.

In the field events, freshman Alexandria Kober (Webster/Webster Schroeder) had a season best performance in finishing fourth in the triple jump.  Her distance of 11.02m (36'-2") surpassed the ECAC qualifying mark while also putting her 10th currently on the ECAC performance list in the event.
