Men’s Basketball (12-11/9-7 SUNYAC)
Feb. 14th vs. New Paltz, W 87-75
Freshman
Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) exploded for a season high 32 points last Friday night in leading the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to an 87-75 win in SUNYAC men's action. The win allowed the Red Dragons to jump over Oswego into fourth place in the conference with two games remaining in the regular season.
McElroy had a solid all-around effort tonight adding five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal. He hit 10-of-14 from the field including 3-of-5 from behind the arc while making 9-of-11 free throws. McElroy scored the first 11 points for Oneonta in the game, as he gave the Red Dragons the lead for good at 11-8 with his second three-pointer.
The second story of the night was junior
Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South), who scored his 1,000
th career point late in the first half when he buried a three-pointer to put Oneonta up 35-23. Mager finished the game with 19 points to give him 1,009 through 63 collegiate games with Oneonta.
Oneonta shot 53 percent from the floor in the opening half, as they held a 44-31 lead at halftime. They finished the game shooting just under 52 percent, which included 9-of-19 from long range. Oneonta led by as many as 16 points late in the second half.
Women’s Basketball (17-6/11-5 SUNYAC)
Feb. 14th vs. New Paltz, W 53-46
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team wore down visiting New Paltz last Friday night en route to a come-from-behind, 53-46, victory. The win for the Red Dragons clinched them a SUNYAC tournament berth, as they ran its season record to 17-6 overall and 11-5 in conference play.
Points off turnovers and the Oneonta bench fueled the night's win. The Red Dragons were able to convert 23 Hawk miscues into 27 points while the bench added 15 points to none for the New Paltz reserves. Leading the Oneonta bench was freshman
Sara DiPasquale (Buffalo, NY/Cardinal O'Hara), who scored a season high 10 points in 19 minutes of action.
Trailing 35-28 with 12:27 remaining in the game, Oneonta began to chip away at the New Paltz lead. Oneonta gained it's first lead since late in the first half when senior
Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) hit one of two technical foul shots, which gave the Red Dragons a 40-39 lead. Crawford finished the game with 14 points to lead Oneonta.
The game was tied one final time at 41-41 before Oneonta closed the final 6:39 with a 12-5 spurt for the final margin of victory. Oneonta made 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
In the game, junior
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) became the all-time leader in block shots. Longto had four blocks in the contest to go with eight boards and three steals. The four blocks gives her 151 for her career, surpassing the previous record of 149, set by Noreen Naughton in 2005.
The Red Dragons opened the game cold, hitting only one of its first 11 shots. After settling in, Oneonta began a run that game them a 9-8 lead on a
DiPasquale layup at the 12:30 mark.
New Paltz regained the lead at 13-9 before seven unanswered points gave Oneonta the lead back at 16-13. The two teams exchanged the lead two more times over the final five minutes of the opening half with the Hawks grabbing a 24-21 lead at the break.
Wrestling (10-9)
Feb. 15th at RIT, W 24-21
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team closed out its regular season last Saturday with a 24-21 victory at RIT. The Red Dragons finished with an overall dual-match record of 10-9, as they now will prepare for the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional tournament at Wesleyan University in two weeks.
The match for Oneonta was clinched at 197 pounds, as the Red Dragons received a forfeit win to go ahead 24-15. The two squads split the 10 bouts overall, but the Red Dragons won three bouts by major decisions to accumulate 12 points to go with a pair of forfeit wins to reach its total of 24 points.
Picking up wins in contested weight classes was freshman
Dominic DeGraba (Dallas, PA/Dallas) (125), and seniors
Ben Mikac (Williamsville/Williamsville East) (141) and
Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) (174). Seniors
Sean Hanson (Lorraine/South Jefferson) and
Chad Obzud (Cohoes/Lansingburgh) were both the beneficiaries of the two forfeits and 133 and 197 respectively.
Men’s Track & Field
Feb. 15th at Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca, Non-scoring
The SUNY Oneonta men's track & field team is two weeks out from defending its SUNYAC championship and, last Saturday, they competed in the Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca College. Highlighting the event was a big day in the throws for junior
J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) along with multiple ECAC qualifiers.
In winning the shot put, Roth recorded a huge personal best while getting himself to the No. 10 spot in Division III. His distance of 16.60m (54'-5.5") was over one meter further than his previous best mark and just shy of the men's record. The mark was also a facility record by over 1.3m, which he set two years ago. Roth also was second in the weight throw with a distance of 17.55m (57'-7"). The winner of the event was from Division I Binghamton.
On the track, Oneonta had three individuals and one relay hit ECAC qualifying marks. Juniors
Bobby Gallant (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) and
Andrew Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) hit the standard in the 800 meters while classmate,
Mike Didas (Endwell/Maine-Endwell), hit the ECAC mark in the 1-mile. The men's 4x200m relay hit the standard in that event.
Gallant and Bohunicky finished 4-5 in the 800m with times of 1:57.13 and 1:57.40 respectively. Gallant's time was an indoor personal best mark while Bohunicky's time was an overall personal best time by nearly two seconds.
Didas' time of 4:26 in the mile was a personal best time, as he finished third overall in the event.

Kyle McCaleb (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) ran an ECAC qualifying time of 1:32.80 in finishing fourth overall in the event.
Women’s Track & Field
Feb. 15th at Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca, Non-scoring
The SUNY Oneonta women's track & field team competed at the Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca College this weekend. The Red Dragons competed in the full day of events last Saturday while two individuals stayed for today to compete in the pentathlon. The Red Dragons had ECAC qualifying performances at the meet while senior
Michelle Chartrand (Boiceville/Onteora) broke the school record in the long jump.
Chartrand recorded a personal best indoor mark of 5.30m (17'-4.75"), which broke her own indoor school record of 5.19m. She finished sixth overall in the event while also placing 13th in the triple jump with a distance of 10.41m (34'-2").
In her first time running in the 5000 meters, freshman
Mary Kate Bida (Millbrook/Millbrook) ran an ECAC qualifying time of 18:43 to finish second in the event.
Freshman
Rachael Shine (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished seventh in the 1000 meters with an ECAC qualifying time of 3:10.
Sophomore
Alyssa Drapeau (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and junior
Marielle Genovesi (Glen Head/North Shore) went 7-8 in the 3000-meter run. Drapeau ran a season best time of 10:43.31 to finish seventh while Genovesi ran an indoor personal best time of 10:43.71 to finish eighth. Both times were good enough to reach the ECAC standard.
Senior
Brittany Cocchieri (Airmont/Suffern) ran a season best time of 26.29 in finishing third in the 200m dash. She was then joined by classmate,
Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip), and freshmen
Carrie Small (Rockland County/North Rockland) and
Katelyn Renna (Fairport/Fairport) in the 4x200m relay, which ran an ECAC qualifying time of 1:47.20.
Brandt was fifth in the 60m dash with a time of 8.06 while finishing sixth in the 200 with a time of 26.71.
Sophomore
Sabrina Felice (New York/LaGuardia) and freshman
Hannah Baker (Marlboro/Marlboro Central) competed with 13 other individuals in the 60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800m run, which make up the pentathlon. Felice came in 11th and Baker finished 14th in the competition. Felice registered a collegiate best 2358 points while Baker collected 2035 for her first time competing.
