Weekly Sports Update - February 14, 2014

Men’s Basketball (11-11/8-7 SUNYAC)
 
Feb. 7th vs. Fredonia, W 87-83 OT
Junior Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) scored six of his game high 29 points in overtime, as the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team defeated Fredonia 87-83 last Friday night in SUNYAC men's action.  Three Red Dragons reached double figures in the contest including freshman Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) and senior Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa), who added 18 and 15 points respectively.

Oneonta matched its largest lead at 55-44 on a jumper by Mager at the 13:33 mark of the second half.  The Red Dragons' other 11-point lead came early in the first half when they jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first 5:23 of the game.

Both times Fredonia battled back including 11 unanswered points to tie the game at 55 apiece on a basket with 10:16 remaining in the game.  It was the first tie since the 16:36 mark of the opening half at 9-9. 

In the final 10 minutes of the game, the largest lead was four points and that came when McElroy made a layup for Oneonta to give them a 65-61 lead with just over four minutes remaining.  McElroy also put the Red Dragons ahead 72-70 with 1:16 to go.

A Blue Devil player made 1-of-2 free throws to get them to within one point with just under one minute left.  The same player had an opportunity to put Fredonia ahead, but made only 1-of-2 free throws with three seconds on the clock and the scored was tied at 72-72.

A last second attempt for Oneonta was off the mark, which forced the extra period of play.

Oneonta jumped out quickly in the overtime, as they took an 80-75 lead in the first 1:23.  Oneonta made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Both teams shot extremely well including the opening five minutes where neither team missed from the floor.  Oneonta finished the game at 51 percent while Fredonia shot 45 percent including 57 percent in the second half.  Both teams made 12 three-point baskets in the game.  Mager had five from long distance.
 
Feb. 8th vs. Buffalo State, W 83-82
Junior Mager and senior Lee combined for 44 points last Saturday to lead the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to a key SUNYAC win against visiting Buffalo State 83-82. 

Oneonta appeared to have a comfortable lead with 6:24 remaining, as they led the Bengals 67-54 after a layup by Lee.  The two teams exchanged runs over the next 1:36, which left the Red Dragons with an 11-point lead with 4:48 to go.

The Bengals then got hot from behind the arc, hitting five from long range, cutting Oneonta's lead to 79-77 with 49 seconds remaining. 

On the ensuing possession after Boyd's three that cut the lead to two points, Lee drove the lane and dished off to sophomore Kareem Williams (Bronx/IN-Tech Academy), who laid the ball in to give Oneonta an 81-77 lead.  Williams had his first collegiate double-double with 15 points and 10 boards.

With six seconds left, the Bengals converted a layup to cut the lead back to two points.  Buffalo State had to foul Mager, who made the pair of free throws on the other end to push the lead back to four points.

Freshman McElroy was the fourth player in double figures for Oneonta with 13 points to go with eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks.

Oneonta trailed 18-11 with 8:48 to go in the first half before closing out with a 22-11 spurt that gave them a 33-29 lead at halftime.  Lee led all scorers in the first half with nine points.
 
Women’s Basketball (16-6/10-5 SUNYAC)
 
Feb. 7th vs. Fredonia, L 63-68
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team nearly overcame another double-digit deficit in the second half, but fell short to Fredonia last Friday night at home 68-63.  The Red Dragons had four players in double figures led by sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool), who netted 17 points.

Oneonta found themselves in a 14-point hole on two occasions in the second half.  Trailing 52-38 with 11:14 remaining in the contest, the Red Dragons began to chip away at Fredonia's lead.  Over the next four minutes, Oneonta scored 11 unanswered points to get within three points at 52-49.  A layup by Price capped the run at the 7:25 mark.

The Red Dragons continued its climb and a layup by sophomore Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) brought the Red Dragons even closer at 59-58 with 2:45 remaining in the game.

On the next possession for Fredonia, a Blue Devil buried a three-pointer to give them some breathing room heading down the stretch.  A layup pushed the lead to five points with 1:29 to go.

Junior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) then made 1-of-2 free throws and a layup to get Oneonta to 64-61 with 46 seconds left.  A jumper and a pair of free throws put the game out of reach for Oneonta.

Senior Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) scored 15 points while dishing out six assists.  Classmate Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) added 12 points while Longto had 11 points.
 
Feb. 8th vs. Buffalo State, W 70-54
Senior Crawford scored a game high 21 points to lead the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team to a convincing, 70-54, win against first place Buffalo State. 

Oneonta's stifling defense held Buffalo State to 32 percent shooting while forcing 21 turnovers.  Those turnovers led to 18 points for the Red Dragons.  The Oneonta bench also outscored the Bengals' reserves 14-9 led by senior Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River), who scored a season high 10 points off the bench.

Oneonta pulled away early in the second half and never let the Bengals back into the contest.  Leading 28-26 at the break, the Red Dragons scored the first 17 points of the second half to take a commanding 45-26 lead with 13:12 remaining.  A three-point basket by freshman Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) capped the run.

Buffalo State made one final push and cut the Oneonta lead to nine points on a three-pointer.  The basket cam at the 9:49 mark and made the score 47-38.

A layup by junior Longto on the next Oneonta possession started a run of eight unanswered points that put the game out of reach for the Bengals.  Longto finished the contest with eight points and eight rebounds.

Senior Schilling contributed 15 points while collecting five steals.  Sophomore Price recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.
 
Wrestling (9-9)
 
Feb. 8th in Quad Meet
vs. Williams, W 21-19; vs. Wesleyan, L 15-20; vs. Ithaca, L 3-42
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team hosted a quad meet last Saturday afternoon with Williams College, Wesleyan University and Ithaca College. 

The highlight of the day for Oneonta was senior Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) picking up his 100th collegiate victory to become the 6th wrestler in program history to reach the milestone.  He recorded the win in his opening bout of the day, a 3-1 sudden victory win against Martin Strenk of Williams.  That win sparked a comeback, as the Red Dragons came from behind to defeat the Ephs 21-19.

After Graff's win at 174 lbs., sophomore Anthony Marino (Nesconset/Sachem North) then pinned Chris Chorzepa in 14 seconds to bring Oneonta to within 19-15 with two weights left to wrestle.  Chad Obzud (Cohoes/Lansingburgh) picked up a 5-2 decision at 197 lbs. leaving it up to senior Stephen Provenzano (Islip/Islip) at 285 lbs.  Provenzano came through with a 4-1 decision to give the Red Dragons its only win of the day.

In Oneonta's other two dual matches, they fell to Wesleyan, 20-15, and Ithaca 42-3.  Senior Ben Mikac (Williamsville/Williamsville East), Provenzano and Obzud were the leaders today with a pair of victories each.
 
Men’s Indoor Track & Field
 
Feb. 7th & 8th at St. Valentine Invitational at Boston University
As championship season gets closer, the SUNY Oneonta men's track & field team's performance keeps getting better.  This past weekend at the Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University, the Red Dragons continued to burn up the track with fast times in many events including a new school record in one event and multiple top-5 performances for the program all-time.

Leading the way with a new school record in the 5K was junior Charles Remillard (Peru/Peru).  Remillard shaved nearly three seconds off the old mark by crossing the finish line in 15:04.41, which was also an indoor personal best mark.  The old record was 15:07 and was set in 2012 on the same track by John Longo (Endwell/Maine-Endwell).

In the same event, classmate Mike Didas (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) ran an indoor personal best time by 19 seconds in finishing at 15:12.95, which is the third fastest time in program history.  Earlier this winter, Didas broke the school record in the 3K event.

The men's Distance Medley Relay nearly set a new school record, as they turned in the second fastest all-time for the program with 10:03.36.  The foursome included senior Tom Haskins (Tully/Tully) (1200m), sophomore Micah Patterson (Plattsburgh/Saranac) (400m), and juniors David and Andrew Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell), who ran the 800m and 1600m legs respectively.

Haskins also ran 4:15.53 in the mile, which is the second fastest all-time.  Right behind him with the third fastest all-time performance is A. Bohunicky, who ran 4:16.74.

David Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) also recorded a personal best time and the second fastest time in program history in the 800m, clocking a 1:54.25 in his heat of the event.

In the sprints, sophomores Joe Carr (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Jake Alviene (East Greenbush/Columbia) continue to impress.  Yesterday they both turned in personal best indoor times in the 200m dash.  Carr ran 21.83, which is currently No. 3 in Division III, while also being the second fastest all-time.  Alviene ran the fifth fastest time in program history of 22.02, which puts him 12th on the Division III performance list.

Sophomores Patterson and Thomas Wheeler (Rocky Point/Rocky Point) turned in personal best times in the 400m with times of 49.38 and 49.83 respectively.
 
Women’s Indoor Track & Field
 
Feb. 7th & 8th at St. Valentine Invitational at Boston University
Championship season is getting closer for the SUNY Oneonta women's track & field team and this past weekend they turned it up a notch at the Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University.  Multiple top-5 all-time performances were turned in including a new school record by senior Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus).

Kennedy shattered her own school record in the 5K by 15 seconds.  She finished 30th overall in a time of 17:32.56, eclipsing her old mark of 17:47.

Also in the same event, freshman Alyssa Drapeau (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Marielle Genovesi (Glen Head/North Shore) ran personal best times that stand second and fourth all-time respectively.  Drapeau ran 18:02.22 while Genovesi finished in a time of 18:23.71.

In the 400 meters, senior Brittany Cocchieri (Airmont/Suffern) broke the one minute barrier for the first time of her career and put herself third on the all-time list in the event.  Her time of 58.94 is nearly two seconds faster than her previous collegiate best mark.

Freshman Mary Kate Bida (Millbrook/Millbrook) turned in the second fastest time in program history in the 3K when she clocked a time of 10:26.75.

A pair of newcomers, Rachael Shine (Clifton Park/Clifton Park) and Megan Ottati (Amsterdam/Amsterdam) ran personal best times in the 800 meters.  They finished with times of 2:20.53 and 2:20.79 respectively.

In the field events, the top performance was turned in by freshman Alexandria Kober (Webster/Webster Schroeder), covered a distance of 11.12m (36'-5.75") in the triple jump.  Her collegiate best performance moved her up to No. 19 in Division III while taking the No. 2 spot in the SUNYAC.
