Weekly Sports Update - Jan. 31, 2014

Men’s Basketball (8-9/5-5 SUNYAC)
 
Jan. 24th vs. Brockport, L 79-81
Brockport converted an old fashioned three-point play with 2.7 seconds on the clock to lift his Golden Eagles to an 81-79 win last Friday evening against SUNY Oneonta. 

The layup was set up when a Golden Eagle player was able to tip the ball away from Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South), collected and charged for the basket.

The late game heroics were necessary after Oneonta sophomore, Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster), made three free throws with 30 seconds to go in the game when he was fouled on a three-point attempt.  Dignan stepped to the line with his team trailing 78-76.  The lead for the Red Dragons was only the third time in the game that they held the lead, as they battled all night long.

Oneonta by 10 points twice during the second half.  The Red Dragons came all the way back to take a 52-51 lead on a layup by freshman Grant Massaroni (Rotterdamd/Monhonasen) at the 12:45 mark.

The Golden Eagles quickly countered with a 15-4 run over the next three minutes to push its lead back to 10 points.  All 15 points in the run came from long distance, as Brockport made five, three-point shots.

Oneonta bounced back with a 15-5 run to tie the contest at 71 apiece with 4:31 left in the game.  Senior Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) buried a deep three-pointer to tie the score.

A 7-1 spurt by Brockport pushed its lead back to six points with 1:47 to go. 

Mager and freshman Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) both made a pair of free throws to pull the Red Dragons to 78-76.

The opening seven minutes of the game were played closely between the two squads.  Brockport was able to open up a 12-point lead with 3:08 remaining in the first half.  The Red Dragons battled back, and a layup by McElroy as time expired got Oneonta to the locker room trailing only 39-35.

Mager led Oneonta with 19 points while McElroy and sophomore Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) each scored 16 points.
 
Jan. 25th vs. Geneseo, L, 69-83
The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting SUNY Geneseo squad last Saturday afternoon, as they fell to the Blue Knights 83-68. 

Oneonta was led by freshman McElroy who scored 20 points while grabbing a team high eight boards.  Junior Mager contributed 10 points and six rebounds.

Oneonta made a couple of runs in the second half after trailing 44-38 at the break.  A McElroy three-point play at the 17:07 mark of the second half got the Red Dragons to within three points at 49-46.  Geneseo countered with a 15-1 run over the next five minutes to push its lead to 17 points at 64-47.

Oneonta made one final push over the next four minutes and a three-pointer by McElroy closed the gap to 70-58 with 8:19 remaining in the contest.  The Blue Knights answered back with 11 unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game at 81-58 with 4:43 to go.

Oneonta came out with a hot hand early in the game, as they jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first two minutes.  The Red Dragons pushed it to seven points on a three by Lee at the 14:27 mark.

Geneseo battled back to take a 19-18 lead on a layup.  The Red Dragons countered with six unanswered to gain the lead back at 24-19 with 7:13 to go in the opening half.

After Geneseo came back to tie the game at 24 apiece, the two teams exchanged the lead for a few minutes before the Blue Knights pulled away for a six-point halftime advantage.
 
Women’s Basketball (13-4/7-3 SUNYAC)
 
Jan. 24th vs. Brockport, L 53-54
A Brockport player grabbed a rebound and put it back with three seconds, as the Golden Eagles stole a road win last Friday night against SUNY Oneonta 54-53.  The rebound came off a missed layup as time was winding down in the contest. 

Oneonta battled from behind all game long and finally gained a 53-52 lead when junior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) made a pair of free throws with 1:15 remaining in the game.  The Red Dragons trailed by as many as 10 points on two occasions during the second half, the last time at the 9:52 mark.

A basket gave the Golden Eagles a 47-37 lead.  Oneonta scored nine unanswered points over the next 3:47 to cut the lead to one point at 47-46 with 6:05 to go.

Freshman Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) buried a three-pointer at the 4:14 mark to tie the game at 49 apiece.  On the next trip down the floor, Brockport made a layup and was fouled.  They completed the three-point play to give Brockport a 52-49 lead with 3:02 left in the game.

A layup by senior Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) got Oneonta back to within one point with 2:44 to go, setting up the opportunity for Longto after a couple of missed shots and a turnover.
Longto finished the game with 12 points and four rebounds.  Senior Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) led Oneonta with 16 points to go with four steals and three assists.
 
Jan. 25th vs. Geneseo, W 61-56
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team turned up the defensive pressure in the second half of today's thrilling comeback victory against SUNY Geneseo 61-56.  The Red Dragons outscored the Blue Knights, 37-17, in the second half including holding Geneseo without a field goal over the final 5:06 of the contest.  Oneonta had held Geneseo without a field goal for four minutes during another stretch in the second half.

After shooting 50 percent in the first half, Oneonta held Geneseo to just 7-of-24 in the second half while forcing 13 Blue Knight turnovers.  Oneonta also held a 14-3 advantage from the line including 5-of-6 down the stretch.

Oneonta trailed by as many as 19 early in the second half after trailing 39-24 at halftime.  The Red Dragons continued to chip away at the Blue Knight lead putting together 16-7 in the opening 10 minutes and a closing run of 15-2 over the final 7:06.  The 19-point comeback for Oneonta is one of the biggest in the program's history.

Senior Crawford scored 13 of her team high 20 points in the second half, as she and junior Longto came up big offensively in the closing minutes of the contest.  Longto converted 5-of-8 from the free throw line in the game and finished with seven points and three blocks.  Sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) was solid and steady in both halves, scoring 13 points in the game while grabbing a team high seven boards and collecting three steals.


Men’s Swimming and Diving (5-2)
 
Jan. 25th vs. New Paltz, W 113-87
The SUNY Oneonta men's swimming and diving team made it two consecutive years of defeating the New Paltz Hawks in a dual meet. The Red Dragons won 113-87 to raise its dual-meet record to 5-2.

Junior Colton Roe (Middletown/Pine Bush) led Oneonta with two individual event wins on the afternoon. Roe won the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke.

Roe, sophomore Joseph Morgan (Cornwall/Cornwall) and freshman Greg Fothergill (Lindenhurst/Lindenhurst Senior) finished one, two and three, taking sixteen points in the 200-yard backstroke.

Red Dragon swimmers finished one-two in three events, including the 200-yard intermediate medley, 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle. Lucas Santiago (Amsterdam/Amsterdam) won the IM and Morgan finished second. Senior Ryan Walsh (Wingdale/Arlington) took first in the butterfly while Santiago touched in second. In the 500 freestyle, Daniel Donaghy (Holtsville/Sachem East) and Kevin Flessa (Middletown/Middletown) finished in first and second, respectively.

Stephen Penteck (Holbrook/Sachem North) was the other individual winner for Oneonta as he won the 1000-yard freestyle.

Flessa, Conor Kelly (Staten Island/Saint Peter's), Walsh and Donaghy won the 400-yard medley relay while the team of Fothergill, Alexander Heilmann (Pleasant Valley/Arlington), Zach Comeau (Pine Bush/Pine Bush) and Daniel Condon (Middletown/Middletown) took second.
 
Women’s Swimming and Diving (5-2)
 
Jan. 25th vs. New Paltz, L 95-110
The SUNY Oneonta women's swimming and diving team fell to the visiting New Paltz Hawks last Saturday 95-110. The loss drops Oneonta's record to 5-2 overall in dual-meets.

The highlight of the afternoon was the new school record set by junior Hillary Chocko (Queensbury/Queensbury) in the 200-yard breaststroke. Chocko broke the old record set by Kristen Magliola (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River) in 2012 by .81 seconds.

In the opening event of the afternoon, the quartet of Carly Cahill (Troy/Troy), Chocko, Lauren Zentko (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Chandler Shepard (Delhi/Delaware Academy) broke a pool record in the 400-yard medley relay. The old record was set back in 2011 by a team from New Paltz. The new record is over 2 seconds faster.

Shepard, Kelly Ruf (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) and Taylor Waldrop (Fairport/Fairport) were all individual winners. Shepard won the 50-yard freestyle, Ruf won the 200-yard butterfly and Waldrop won the 200-yard backstroke.

Three other pool records were broke by swimmers from New Paltz. Cassidy Griger set a new record in the 200-yard freestyle while Chelsea Allocco set records in winning the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle events.
 
Wrestling (8-7)
 
Jan. 25th vs. Oswego, W 41-6
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team won nine of 10 bouts including two by pin fall, as they completely dominated visiting Oswego 41-6. 

The match began with an 8-4 decision at 125 lbs. for Oneonta freshman, Dominic DeGraba (Dallas, PA/Dallas), over Kevin Ramkishun.

Sean Hanson (Lorraine/South Jefferson) followed at 133 lbs. with a 10-0 major decision against Quamaine Thomas.

Oneonta then recorded a major decision win at 141 lbs. by senior Ben Mikac (Williamsville/Williamsville East) before freshman Nicholas Heck (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) won a hard fought, 4-2, decision at 149 lbs.

After a forfeit win at 157 lbs., sophomore Shaun Gillen (Bohemia/Connetquot) was trailing in the third period before turning the tables and pinning, David Hall, with 13 seconds remaining in the match.

Senior Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) then recorded a tech fall early in the third period over Christopher Farrell.

The final two wins for Oneonta came at 197 lbs. by Chad Obzud (Cohoes/Lansingburgh), who pinned Joe Gorsuch, and at 285 lbs. by Stephen Provenzano (Islip/Islip), who record a 12-3 major decision.

The Lakers lone victory today came at 184 lbs. when junior Scott Bova pinned Anthony Marino (Nesconset/Sachem North) late in the first period.
 
Jan. 28th at King’s College, W 23-18
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team picked up a 23-18 road victory last night at King's College, as they ran its dual-meet record to 8-7 overall.  The Red Dragons won five of the 10 bouts including one by pin, two by major decision and one by forfeit.

After a close 4-3 decision loss at 125 lbs., Oneonta picked up its first points of the night when the Monarchs forfeited at 133 lbs.

Senior Mikac took a 12-1 major decision against Giacomo Dinicola to increase Oneonta's lead to 10-3.

King's then won the next three bouts by decision to take a 12-10 lead entering 174 lbs.  Senior Graff took care of his combatant by pinning him early in the third period to give Oneonta the lead back at 16-12.

Shane Stark of King's then posted a pin at 184 lbs. to seize the lead back for the Monarchs at 18-16.

In the final two weight classes, seniors Obzud and Provenzano came through to secure the victory for Oneonta.  Obzud recorded a major decision at 197 lbs. while Provenzano clinched the match with a 9-2 decision at 285 lbs.
 
Men’s Track & Field
 
Jan. 24th at NYU Team Challenge at NY Armory, Non-scoring
Jan. 25th at Hamilton College Continental Invite, Non-scoring
The SUNY Oneonta men's track & field team competed at two events this past weekend, as the Red Dragons traveled to New York City on Friday and Hamilton College last Saturday. 


The highlight at the NYU Team Challenge for the men was a new school record in the 3000-meter run by junior Mike Didas (Endwell/Maine-Endwell).  Didas was third overall with a time of 8:35.01, breaking the previous school record in the event of 8:35.15 set by John Longo (Endwell/Maine-Endwell), who ran that time in 2012, also at the Armory.

Sophomore Jake Alviene (East Greenbush/Columbia) had the third fastest qualifying time in the 60-meter hurdle prelims of 8.35 and finished sixth overall in the finals.

Sophomore Micah Patterson (Plattsburgh/Saranac) ran an ECAC qualifying time of 1:06.80, which gave him an eighth place finish in the event.

David Bohunicky and Andrew Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) also turned in personal best performances in the 800 meters and one mile events.  David was eighth overall with an indoor PR time of 1:55.61.  Andrew ran a personal best time of 4:18.77 in finishing sixth in the mile.

The throwers had another solid day on Saturday at Hamilton.  Juniors Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus) and J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) were at the top again in both the weight throw and shot put events.  They finished 1-2 in the weight throw while Roth was second in the shot put and Weinert was fourth in the event.

Weinert won the weight throw with a distance of 18.12m (59'-5.5"), just shy of his school record toss from last weekend.  He recorded a distance of 13.78m (45'-2.5") in the shot put.

Roth was just shy of his personal best mark in the weight throw, as he had a toss of 17.87m (58'-7.5") in finishing second.  In the shot put, he recorded a distance of 15.24m (50') in placing second in that event.

On the track, junior Jay Berube (Putnam Station/Ticonderoga) had the highest finish in an individual event for Oneonta on the day.  Berube crossed the line in 2:02.01 to finish third in the 800-meter run.
 
Women’s Track & Field

The SUNY Oneonta women's track & field team competed at two events this past weekend, as the Red Dragons traveled to New York City on Friday and Hamilton College on Saturday. 


The highlight at the NYU Team Challenge for the women was a new school record in the 3000-meter run by senior Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus).  Kennedy won the event with a time of 10:12.84, breaking her previous mark in the event of 10:16.30 also run at the Armory last March.

Seniors Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip) and Brittany Cocchieri (Airmont/Suffern) had solid performances in the 200-meter dash.  Cocchieri was seventh in a time of 26.34 while Brandt was next in eighth place with a time of 26.40.  Brandt was also ninth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.17.

Freshman Megan Ottati (Amsterdam/Amsterdam) ran a personal best time of 2:24.82 to finish tenth in the 800-meter run.

Leading the performances at Hamilton was freshman Alexandria Kober (Webster/Webster Schroeder), who recorded an ECAC qualifying distance in the triple jump.  Her distance of 10.91m (35'-9.5") was good enough for second place in the event, while being within two feet of the school record.  Kober also finished sixth in the long jump, as Oneonta went 4-5-6 in the event.

Just ahead of Kober were sophomore Kaitlyn Kieser (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) and senior Michelle Chartrand (Boiceville/Onteora).  Chartrand was fourth with a distance of 4.89m (16'-0.5") while Kieser was fifth with a distance of 4.81m (15'-9.5").  Chartrand was also fourth in the triple jump and Kieser was ninth in the triple jump.

Freshman Carrie Small (Rockland County/North Rockland) finished third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.80.

Senior Shana Ventresca (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) and freshman Eden Zeitler (Averill Park/Averill Park) each turned in personal best performances in the 200.  Zeitler was fourth overall with a time of 8.14 while Ventresca was sixth with a time of 8.20.
