Men’s Basketball (8-7/5-3 SUNYAC)

Jan. 17th vs. Potsdam, W 72-51
The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team put up 36 points in each half  last Friday night, as they easily defeated visiting SUNY Potsdam 72-51 to record its fourth straight win.

Oneonta trailed 3-2 in the first minute of the night's contest before two straight from long distance by senior Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) gave the Red Dragons a lead that they would not relinquish.  Lee finished the game with 10 points.

Potsdam continued to battle and kept the game close for most of the opening half before Oneonta pulled away towards the end of the half, building itself a 36-24 lead at the break.  Junior Tyler Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) scored 16 of his game high 24 points in the opening twenty minutes.

It was much of the same in the second half, as Oneonta continued to pull away, building on its halftime lead in the first five minutes.  A three-point play by sophomore Seth Thomsen (South New Berlin/Norwich) gave Oneonta a 53-31 lead at the 14:54 mark.  Thomsen finished with a season high nine points.

The Red Dragons shot an even 40 percent from the floor including 10-of-22 from long range.  They outrebounded the Bears 46-35 and hit 14-of-16 free throws.

Jan. 18th vs. Plattsburgh, L, 73-84
The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team fell at home last Saturday to visiting Plattsburgh 84-73 in SUNYAC men's action.

Oneonta trailed 63-53 after a made three-pointer with 9:30 to go in the contest.  The Red Dragons then ran off eight straight points over the next minute to cut the Cardinals lead back to two points.

After a timeout by Plattsburgh, the Cardinals countered with an 8-0 run of its own to push its lead back to 10 points with 4:41 remaining.  The spurt was capped by a pair of free throws.

A basket by sophomore Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) on the next possession was the last time Oneonta trailed by less than double digits.  The Cardinals put together another 8-0 run over the next three minutes to put the game out of reach.

Junior Mager led Oneonta again with 28 points.  It was the eleventh time this season that Mager has scored at least twenty points in a game.

Zuvic finished with 12 points, classmate Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster) added 11 points and freshman Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) scored 10 points while grabbing a team high nine boards.

Jan. 21st vs. Cortland, L, 67-72
A valiant second half comeback fell just short for the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team as they fell, 72-67, to rival SUNY Cortland.  With the game tied at 65 apiece with 1:53 remaining in the game, it was the visiting SUNY Cortland Red Dragons that pulled out the victory down the stretch.

After a pair of free throws by senior Lee tied the game at 65, Cortland drained a three from the top of the key to put Cortland ahead 68-65.

The two teams exchanged turnovers before Lee made a layup to pull Oneonta to 68-67 with 32 seconds left.

After an Oneonta timeout, McElroy committed the foul to put a Cortland player on the line with 16 seconds to go.  They made both free throws to push the lead back to three points.

On Oneonta's ensuing possession, Lee drove to the basket and missed a layup, but got his own rebound and sent a pass out to Mager, who had a look at a tying three-pointer, but came up short.

Cortland made a pair of free throws for the final margin of victory.

Oneonta had four players in double figures led by Mager's 20 points.  McElroy finished with 15 points while sophomores Dignan and Zuvic scored 11 and 10 points respectively.

The lead went back-and-forth through the first five minutes of the game, settling in at 17-17 when Zuvic made a jumper for Oneonta at the 12:33 mark.

Women’s Basketball (12-3/6-2 SUNYAC)

Jan. 17th vs. Potsdam, W 70-50
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team outscored visiting SUNY Potsdam 38-23 in the second half, pulling away for an easy 70-50 win last Friday at home in SUNYAC action.  Three players reached double figures for Oneonta.

Senior Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) led the Red Dragons with 19 points while classmate Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) and junior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) added 10 points each.  Oneonta held a huge advantage in points off turnovers (17-6) and second chance points (20-6).  They also held a decided rebounding advantage 59-33 including 21 offensive rebounds.

Oneonta came out of halftime leading 32-27 and quickly built its lead to 11 points in the opening five minutes of the second half.  A layup by Longto gave the Red Dragons its double-digit lead as they cruised from there to the finish.  Longto, sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) and freshman Brianna Spector (Philadelphia, PA/Upper Dublin) all grabbed eight boards in the contest to lead Oneonta.

Oneonta connected on three consecutive layups to jump out to an early 6-0 lead.  Potsdam then scored eight points to bring the game its first tie at 8 apiece at the 16:26 mark.  The two teams would exchange the lead a few times over the next 10 minutes and would be tied again at 21-21 with 6:41 remaining in the half ona jumper for Potsdam.

The Red Dragons would close the half with an 11-4 spurt to take a 32-27 lead into the break.  Crawford led Oneonta teams with 14.

Jan. 18th vs. Plattsburgh, L 59-70
In a battle between two of the top teams in the SUNYAC, it was Plattsburgh who got the edge with a 70-59 victory against SUNY Oneonta last Saturday in women's basketball action.

A jumper by a Cardinal with 3:48 to go in the game gave Plattsburgh a 60-49 lead, as it looked as though they had the game well in hand.  Sophomore Price would head to the line for a pair of free throws after a Cardinal fouled out.  Price made both to cut the lead back to single digits.

At the 3:29 mark, sophomore Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) stole the inbound pass after Price's free throws and was fouled righ.

Oneonta continued its comeback as Loomis made 1-of-2 and then was followed one minute later with two more free throws from Price.  Senior Schilling then stole a pass, which she converted into a layup while also getting fouled.  She made the free throw and Oneonta now trailed by only three points, 60-57, with 1:29 remaining.

Plattsburgh would make 10-of-10 free throws down the stretch as they pulled away for the 11-point win.

The two teams battled through the opening half to a 28-28 tie.  There were three ties overall and four lead changes in the first half.  Freshman Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) came off the bench to lead Oneonta with 10 points.  Adams finished the game with a season high 13 points.

Senior Crawford led Oneonta with 17 points while Schilling added 15 points, five assists and three steals.

Jan. 21st vs. Cortland, W 51-32
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball held its rival, SUNY Cortland, to a season low in points last Tuesday night en route to a lopsided 51-32 victory in SUNYAC action.  The win for Oneonta allowed them to sweep the two meetings between the rivals for the year, as last Tuesday, Oneonta defeated Cortland in their gym.

Senior Crawford led three Oneonta players in double figures with 16 points.  Classmate Schilling and junior Longto each added 10 points.  Longto and sophomore Price each collected eight boards to lead Oneonta.  Longto also had four blocks while Price and Crawford each had four steals.

Oneonta carried a 10-point lead into the second half and continued to build on it through the first nine minutes of the second half.  A layup by sophomore Loomis gave Oneonta a 37-19 lead.  A few minutes later, Oneonta was up by twenty points, as they cruised from that point to the finish.

The visitors never got on track, as the combination of poor shooting and turnovers proved to be their undoing.  Cortland didn't have a single player reach double figures in the contest.

The first half was played end-to-end, but both squads found it tough going on the scoring end.  Oneonta managed to shoot 29 percent and Cortland struggled to shoot 20 percent and finished the game shooting 19 percent.  Oneonta did hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line that allowed them to take a comfortable 26-16 lead into halftime.  Both teams had stretches where they couldn't convert field goals, which led to the low scoring opening half of play.
