Weekly Sports Update - January 17, 2014

Men’s Basketball (7-5/4-1 SUNYAC)
 
Jan. 11th at New Paltz, W 80-75
Junior Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) poured in 31 points for a second time this season, as he led the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to an 80-75 win at New Paltz last Saturday afternoon. 

Mager has been lighting it up all season long for the Red Dragons, as he has scored 20+ points in nine of the 11 games this season including the two with 30+ points.  He was 10-of-21 from the floor while making 9-of-12 free throws to lead Oneonta.

As a team, Oneonta shot an even 50 percent from the field, which included 7-of-13 from behind the arc.  Oneonta also held a decided advantage from the charity stripe, 21-10.

Oneonta overcame a 42-36 halftime deficit in the day’s contest.  The Red Dragons shot 52 percent from the field while making its free throws down the stretch.  Freshman Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) scored 12 of his 14 points in the game in the second half surge.  Mager scored 18 of his 31 points during the second half.

Oneonta cut New Paltz's lead to one point before a jumper by sophomore Nicholas Segarra (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) put them up 45-44.  The Hawks came right down and took the lead back before a layup by sophomore Seth Thomsen (South New Berlin/Norwich) gave the Red Dragons the lead for good at 47-46 with 13:42 remaining in the contest.  The basket by Thomsen fueled nine unanswered for Oneonta, who pushed its lead to eight points on a basket by Mager at the 10:30 mark.

The Hawks cut Oneonta's lead to two points with 4:33 to go, but a three-point basket by McElroy on the ensuing possession, gave Oneonta some breathing room down the stretch.
 
Jan. 14th at Cortland, W 78-70 OT
For the second time in the last week, the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team defeated a team ahead of them in the SUNYAC standings in overtime.  Last Tuesday eveing, it was rival SUNY Cortland that Oneonta knocked off 78-70.  Oneonta has now won three straight games.

Freshman McElroy led four Oneonta players in double figures with 19 points.  Sophomore Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) came off the bench to score 17 points.  Sophomore Dignan scored a season high 15 points that included four from long distance while senior Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) added 14 points.  Dignan had six of Oneonta's 13 points in the overtime.

Of the 24 baskets made tonight for Oneonta, 15 of them were from long range.  It was the second most three-pointers in program history, falling one shy of 16 set back on Nov. 17, 2012 versus York (Pa) College.  Oneonta attempted 31 in the contest, which was its most since 2004.

The two teams were tied at the end of regulation at 65 apiece, which forced the extra period.  Dignan and McElroy levied the knockout punch in the early going of overtime with back-to-back three-pointers that pushed Oneonta to a 71-65 lead.  Oneonta built its lead to as many as nine points in the extra period, which was its largest of the contest.

Down the stretch in regulation the two teams were tied at 55 apiece on a pair of free throws for Cortland to tie the score at the 6:06 mark.

The two teams exchanged three-pointers before Zuvic buried a trey to give Oneonta at 61-58 lead with 3:06 remaining.  Two minutes later, a three-pointer put Cortland ahead 65-63 with just over one minute to go.  On the ensuing possession, Lee made a layup to tie the game with 47 seconds remaining.

Dignan made a steal to give Oneonta one last shot, which was a missed three-pointer by Lee with one second left on the clock.

Oneonta led 9-4 in the first eight minutes before Cortland scored 10 unanswered points to take a 14-9 lead with just over 10 minutes to go in the opening half.  Cortland led by as many as nine points with 7:37 to go before Oneonta closed the half with a 19-11 spurt to close the gap to 33-32 at the break.
 
Women’s Basketball (10-2/4-1 SUNYAC)
 
Jan. 11th at New Paltz, W 60-42
Senior Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) and freshman Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) each scored 12 points to lead the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team to a 60-42 road victory at New Paltz last Saturday in SUNYAC action. 

The biggest advantage for Oneonta came from its bench players.  Led by Adams' season high 12 points, the Red Dragons' bench outscored the Hawks' reserves 35-18.  Oneonta also made 6-of-15 shots from behind the arc while connecting on 12-of-14 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 12 apiece at the 8:45 mark of the first half.  The Red Dragons then ripped off 12 unanswered to seize control of the game, as they rolled their way to a 33-14 lead at halftime.

Oneonta continued to roll in the second half with much of the reserves playing most of the second half.  The Red Dragons finished the game shooting 39 percent from the field to New Paltz's 20 percent.
 
Jan. 14th at Cortland, W 72-65
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team won its sixth straight game last Tuesday night, as they defeated rival SUNY Cortland on the road 72-65.  Oneonta (10-2/4-1 SUNYAC) had three players reach double figures led by senior Crawford's season and collegiate high 24 points.  Crawford has now posted 20+ points in two out of her last three games.  She also added nine boards and five assists.

The two squads went back-and-forth for the first nine minutes of the second half.  There were five lead changes during that stretch with the final one coming when Crawford buried one of her collegiate best six three-pointers.  Her three-pointer gave Oneonta a 55-53 lead with 11:43 remaining.

After pushing its lead to six points, Cortland fought back to get to within one point on a Lindsey Minor basket that made the score 62-61 at the 7:43 mark.  Oneonta essentially put the game out of reach with seven unanswered, capped by a pair of free throws by sophomore Pricewith just over one minute to go.  Price scored eight points in the second half and finished the game with 13 points to go with eight rebounds.

Junior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Longto got Oneonta rolling in the second half with the team's first six points out of the locker room.

Oneonta had to dig itself out of a 10-point deficit late in the opening half.  Trailing 31-21 with 6:16 to go in the first half, Oneonta closed with a 12-4 spurt to pull within 35-33 at the break.  Oneonta had 10 offensive rebounds in the half that led to 15 second chance points to Cortland's two points.

Freshman Adams started the closing run by hitting a three-pointer and senior Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River) closed the half with a layup with one second left on the clock.
 
Wrestling (6-6)
 
Jan. 11th at North-South Duals at Ursinus College
Vs. McDaniel, W 28-21; vs. Trinity, W 36-12;
vs. Gettysburg, W 33-15; vs. Elizabethtown, W 36-10
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team swept through the annual North-South Duals last Saturday hosted by Ursinus College. 

Leading the Red Dragons on the day was seniors Ben Mikac (Williamsville/Williamsville East) and Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington), and sophomore Shaun Gillen (Bohemia/Connetquot), who all were a perfect 4-0 on the day.  Gillen recorded three wins by pin fall while Graff collected a pair of pins.

Senior Chad Obzud (Cohoes/Lansingburgh) and freshman Dominic DeGraba (Dallas, PA/Dallas) each recorded three victories today for Oneonta.  Obzud added two more pins to his team leading 12 that he had entering the matches.
