Men’s Soccer (1-0)

August 31st at Ithaca, W 1-0 OT
SUNY Oneonta sophomore Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) scored in the 94th minute to lift the men's soccer team to a season opening 1-0 victory last Saturday at Ithaca College.  The goal came on a breakaway after junior Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) sent a long pass ahead that Williams was able to secure before putting it past the keeper.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 90 minutes of today's contest, which was the opening game for both squads.  The shots were 2-2 after the first half until Oneonta turned up the heat in the final 45 minutes hoping to get a shot to go to the back of the goal.  The Ithaca keeper was up to the task, keeping the Red Dragons off the scoreboard.

"We dominated possession throughout the match, but didn't create enough goal scoring opportunities," texted coach Byrne.  "Ithaca was organized and defended well in numbers and could have won the game if they had capitalized on one of their counter attacks."

Williams finished the contest with three shots on goal including the game-winner.  The Red Dragons finished the game with a 14-6 advantage in shots.

Junior transfer, Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin), and classmate Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) combined for the shutout.  Pellegrino made two saves while DeBottis played the final 48 minutes and recorded no saves in picking up his initial win of the season.

Women’s Soccer (1-1)

August 30th vs. Richard Stockton, W 2-1 (Cougar Classic)
August 31st at Kean, L 1-2 (Cougar Classic)
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team returned home from the Cougar Classic hosted by Kean University 1-1 last weekend.  They defeated Richard Stockton on Friday 2-1 before falling to the host on Saturday by the same score.

Oneonta got off to a hot start against Richard Stockton when senior Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield) finished off a cross from sophomore Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) just 22 seconds into the game. Ceschini won the ball off the kickoff and dribbled down the right hand side before playing a long cross into Regensburger who one-timed it by the keeper into the net for the quick 1-0 lead.

The Red Dragons kept up the pressure up with three shots in the next four minutes, which included hitting the crossbar and a blocked shot by a defender for a ball that was headed into the goal. Senior Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) broke through in the 24th minute with a long run down the right side of the field and finished it off herself before the keeper could get to there.

The Ospreys were able to pull a goal back when their player was fouled inside the penalty area resulting in a red card. Oneonta's goalkeeper, Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central), made the initial save on penalty shot, but a second penalty kick was awarded just eight seconds later that was converted.

Down to ten players, the Red Dragons were able to deflect the pressure that Stockton was applying to pick up the first win of the season.

In Saturday’s game versus Kean, the Cougars broke open the scoring in the 25th minute when they were able to finish the rebound from the initial save Murphy made on a breakaway.

The game continued to be end to end for the next 50 minutes with neither team having any real scoring opportunities. DeSimone would be the player to answer the call for the Red Dragons. She received the pass at the top of the 18 and weaved into the box before being dragged down by a Cougar defender. She stepped up to the spot and took the shot herself. Kean's goalkeeper got her hand on the ball and deflected it off the post, but not far enough as DeSimone followed the shot and buried it in the net to tie the game.

The Cougars would answer back as they applied pressure to the Red Dragons. In the 84th minute, a corner kick was headed off the crossbar and fell to the feet of an open Kean player who put it into the goal.

Oneonta responded with high pressure themselves and had two corner kick opportunities of their own before the end of the game.

The game was evenly played with Oneonta holding the edge in the shot department 14 to 12 and Kean in corners 6 to 5.

Murphy made five saves in the game and her counterpart, Nunez, made eight.

Field Hockey (3-0)

August 31st at St. Lawrence, W 2-0 (St. Lawrence Tournament)
September 1st vs. Cedar Crest, W 9-1 (St. Lawrence Tournament)
SUNY Oneonta Field Hockey returned home from the St. Lawrence Tournament last weekend sweeping both games with a 2-0 victory over the host St. Lawrence on Saturday and a 9-1 rout of Cedar Crest Sunday.

In Saturday's game, junior forward Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden) scored one goal and provided an assist on another as the Red Dragons defeated St. Lawrence 2-0 in the season opener for both teams. Oneonta scored the only goal of a tight first half with exactly two minutes left on the clock prior to half time off a penalty corner. Hannah Hayward (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) sent a pass to Forbragd who was on her left. Forbragd snapped a shot between the Saint goalie to the inside of the near post for the game's first goal.

The Saints had some chances in the first half and trailed 10-8 in shots, but the Red Dragons came out firing in the second half and outshot the Saints 9-1 in the first 12 minutes of the second period. Oneonta added to their lead with 2:27 remaining in regulation time when Forbragd again had a hand in the scoring.

Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) worked the ball in from the right side and got it to Forbragd, who sent a pass across the goal mouth which Anna Torri (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) tapped home to make it a 2-0 game at 67:33.

Oneonta's goalie, Krista Servedio (Shrub Oak/Lakeland), stopped all six Saint shots on goal for her first shutout of the year.

The game against Cedar Crest was over within the first half as Oneonta scored all nine of their goals within that time frame. Day started the scoring off just 1:07 into the game when she was able to finish off a pass from Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) to the near post. Day followed up with her second goal, just a little over two minutes later, on pass from Morgan to the center of the goal.

The Red Dragons would go on to score six goals in less than a ten minute span. Erin Butler (Walton/Walton) and Torri each scored two goals while Sierra Earle (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) and Tatum Knapp (Marathon/Marathon) added one. Knapp added a second goal in the half just four minutes shy of the intermission.

Oneonta outshot the Falcons 40-4 and had a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Servedio and Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) shared the goalkeeping responsibilities with Tracy picking up one save in the game and Servedio earning her second victory on the season.

September 4th vs. Hamilton, W 4-3
Three goals in the first half and an insurance goal in the second earned SUNY Oneonta field hockey the win over Hamilton College 4-3 in their home opener last Wednesday.

Oneonta got on the board early as they scored :57 seconds in to the game. Sophomore Sara Rattigan (Stormville/Carmel) was able to tip a Chelsea Remling (Mahopac/Lakeland) shot that was taken after picking up the loose ball off a turnover.

The Red Dragons would add two more additional goals to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission. Day passed a penalty corner to Morgan at the top of the striking circle, who played the ball to Remling. Remling hit a one time shot toward the goal that Forbragd tipped past the goalkeeper. Morgan would score the game's third goal when she picked up a deflected pass and hit a screamer to the back post before Hamilton's goalkeeper could react.

The Continentals got on the board in with two minutes remaining when a player received a pass back from off her own penalty corner to tuck it by Oneonta's goalkeeper, Tracy.

Forbragd would open up the second half with her second goal, and team leading third on the season, just two minutes into play. Day was once again the set up person as she sent a pass across the circle to Forbragd, who scored to the far post.

Hamilton stepped up the pressure and scored two of their own to cut the Red Dragon lead to 4-3.

The Red Dragons would hold on as the Continentals had two penalty corners in the last three minutes of the game. A game saving stop by Tracy, who pushed the ball high into the air was cleared down the field and time would expire before Hamilton could get back down the field.

Oneonta outshot the Continentals 17-12. Hamilton held a slight advantage in penalty corners 13-10.

Tracy made four saves in the game for her first win of the season.
