Men’s Soccer (3-2-1)
Sept. 14 vs. Vassar, T 1-1 OT2
The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team battled visiting Vassar College last Saturday to a 1-1 draw at home. The Red Dragons gave up a late goal in the second half and then couldn't knock one home.
Oneonta controlled play for most of the first half, as they carried the play in the Vassar end of the field. The Red Dragons finally broke through in the 31st minute when sophomore
Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) collected a chip pass from senior
Jason Ruivo (Sleepy Hollow/Sleepy Hollow) just inside the box. Williams turned and put a shot along the ground that snuck by the outstretched keeper into the back of the goal.
Oneonta held a 7-2 advantage in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corners in the opening half of play.
The momentum shifted somewhat in the second half, as the Brewers generated some pressure of its own. What looked like a harmless ball over the top of the Oneonta defense landed on senior Rob Manukyan's foot inside the box. Manukyan then dribbled a few steps and flicked a shot by
Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) to tie the game in the 87th minute.
Neither team generated a real threat in the two overtime periods and the game ended in a draw.
Sep. 17 vs. Cazenovia, W 10-0
The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team put 10 goals on the scoreboard last Tuesday in a lopsided victory against visiting Cazenovia. The Red Dragons had seven different players score including four that registered their first collegiate goals.
The high man for the game was sophomore
Zef Saljanin (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown), who registered a collegiate career high three goals in the game. He finished the contest with seven points, as he added an assist on Oneonta's ninth goal.
Classmate
Alex Winiarski (Great Neck/St. Anthony's) added one goal and three assists for Oneonta. Winiarski assisted on the opening three goals in the first half, as Oneonta jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the break.
Collecting their first collegiate goals in the contest were freshmen
Anthony Passiatore (South Setauket/Ward Melville), who scored twice, and
Tyler Kirschner (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East),
Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City) and
Jared Dalleo (Marlboro/Our Lady of Lourdes). Dalleo also had a pair of assists while Kirschner had one assist.
Picking up his first win in an Oneonta uniform in goal was junior
Brian Wagstaff (Apalachin/Chenango Valley), who registered three saves in the match.
The 10 goals in the match for Oneonta was the first time since 2009 that they collected that many in one game. The three assists for Winiarski was the first time since 2006 that an individual had that many assists in one game.
Women’s Soccer (3-3)
Sept. 14th at Skidmore, L 0-2
Sept. 15th at Williams, L 0-2
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team fell on the road last Sunday to Williams 2-0.
The Ephs got off to a strong start. An Eph weaved through several defenders in the box and faked out goalkeeper
Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster) for an open look at the net but an Oneonta defender cleared the ball, though, to keep the game scoreless.
Less than four minutes later, an Eph gathered the ball at the top of the box and made a move around a defender before sailing the ball over the keeper's head into the middle of the net.
Just eight minutes later, the Ephs were awarded a corner kick and the ball was misplayed by an Oneonta defender in the box and took a bounce in the middle. A Williams player controlled the ball off the bounce and skipped it into the net.
Oneonta tried to get back in the game with a free kick from the right corner.
Liz Lasota (Cutchogue/Mattituck) rocketed the ball perfectly over the crowd to the far crossbar, but Eph keeper calmly collected it to keep the Ephs up 2-0.
The score held for the rest of the half despite the Ephs' continued pressure - they outshot the Red Dragons 10-2 in the opening frame.
In the second half, the Ephs continued to push. Fifteen minutes in a free kick was sent in from the right side of the box that was headed to another player who fired at the net. Stark, however, made a great save on her knees to keep her team in the game.
The Red Dragons looked to gain some momentum as
Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) carried the ball up the right sideline ahead of her teammates just over two minutes later. She rocketed the ball at the net, but the keeper came off her line to make the save.
Oneonta continued to push.
Avery Serfis (West Hurley/Onteora) fired the ball on net from the middle of the box. It looked as if the ball would curve over Van Wetter's head into the net, but at the last second she made the beautiful one-handed save to send the ball over the cross bar instead.
The rest of the half passed without either team able to finish as the keepers played more aggressively to keep the ball out of the net.
Field Hockey (5-2)
Sept. 14th vs. William Smith (#10), L 2-3
The SUNY Oneonta Field Hockey team took on their third ranked opponent in consecutive games, falling at home to #10 William Smith 3-2.
The game started with William Smith opening the scoring at the 12:37 mark as a Heron picked up a lose ball in the circle after a scramble to put it past Oneonta goalkeeper,
TTess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool). A second goal less than seven minutes later put William Smith up 2-0.
Oneonta would pull one back before the halftime break when
Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden) tucked home a shot that hit the post and deflected to her. Forbragd currently leads the team in goals seven.
The Herons would add an insurance goal in the 48th minute.
The Red Dragons picked up the pressure as junior
Sierra Earle (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) scored her second goal of the season. Senior
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) took the penalty corner pass from
Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) and touched it to her right to Earle. Earle ripped the shot past the Heron's goalie to pull Oneonta to within one but time ran out before Oneonta could counter again.
Tracy made ten saves in the game, many of the outstanding variety.
Sept. 18th vs. Ithaca, W 3-2
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team scored two second half goals to rally from a one goal deficit to defeat the Ithaca College Bombers last Wednesday at home.
Ithaca got on the scoreboard early off a penalty corner in the fourth minute when a shot from outside the circle deflected off goalie
Tracy into the goal, which is scored as an own goal.
The Red Dragons tied the score in the 23rd minute on a rebound goal from freshman
Erin Butler (Walton/Walton). Butler was in the right spot to collect the rebound off a shot by senior
Morgan off a penalty corner.
The Bombers went ahead in the 27th minute. A Bomber directed a crossing pass that deflected off Oneonta defender Earle and into the goal.
Oneonta held a 12-6 advantage in shots in the opening half while the Bombers held a slight edge in penalty corners 8-5.
The second half was all Oneonta, as they controlled the play from the beginning. Two goals in the first 12 minutes gave the Red Dragons its margin of victory. Junior
Forbragd evened the score in the 42nd minute. It was Forbragd's team-leading eighth goal of the season. Forbragd has scored in all but one game this fall.
The game-winner for Oneonta came exactly five minutes later when junior Day dribbled into the circle and got a shot off that found the back of the goal.
