Weekly Sports Update - September 13, 2013

Men’s Soccer (2-2)
 
Sept. 6th vs. Messiah, L 1-2 OT (Mayor’s Cup Tournament)
Last Friday's men's soccer matchup between No. 24 SUNY Oneonta and No. 1 and defending Division III national champion lived up to the hype, as the game went into overtime before Messiah took a 2-1 victory in front of 1,200 fans adorned in Red and White.

This was the second straight year that Oneonta took Messiah to overtime.  Last fall, the Red Dragons battled the Falcons to a scoreless draw.

The game-winner came in the 93rd minute when Joshua Wood got his head on a crossing pass from the left flank by Jack Thompson and redirected the ball passed an outstretched Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse).

The two squads battled through the first 90 minutes deadlocked at 1-1.  Messiah held a slight advantage overall in shots at the conclusion of regulation 9-7.

After a scoreless first half, Messiah blasted a shot into the upper right corner to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute. 

The Red Dragons continued to battle and finally broke through in the 69th minute.  Sophomore Brian Bartichek (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) stole the ball from a Messiah defender just outside the box and sent the ball across where classmate Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) one-touched the ball to a waiting Alex Winiarski (Great Neck/St. Anthony's).  Winiarski wasted no time in getting off a shot that sailed to the back of the goal to tie the game at one apiece.

Both goalkeepers kept the game scoreless in the first half with some great stops.  Oneonta had five shots.
DeBottis made a couple of diving stops that were labeled for the back of the goal.
 
Sept. 7th vs. Franklin & Marshall, L 0-1 (Mayor’s Cup Tournament)
The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team found the scoring opportunities hard to come by last Saturday, as the fell to Franklin & Marshall 1-0 in the final game of the Division III Oneonta Mayor's Cup Tournament. 


There weren't many scoring chances in the match, as the final shots were 6-5 in favor of Oneonta.  Of the six shots that Oneonta had in the contest, one hit the cross bar in the first half that would have tied the score.

The Diplomats pushed across its lone goal in the 22nd minute of play on a rocket from the top of the box.

Senior Jason Ruivo (Sleepy Hollow/Sleepy Hollow) and junior Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) were selected to the All-Tournament Team for Oneonta.
 
Sept. 10th vs. Elmira, W 4-0
Four different players scored last Tuesday, as they cruised past visiting Elmira 4-0 in nonconference action at home. 

Oneonta didn't waste any time in putting the first goal on the scoreboard, as junior Cain redirected a crossing pass from senior Ruivo by the Elmira keeper in the third minute of the contest.

Sophomore Williams would collect the next goal for Oneonta in the 20th minute.  Williams stole the ball just outside the box and ran by a defender before sending a shot past Nick Lapinski into the back of the net.

The Red Dragons final goal of the first half came from sophomore Ryan Young (Stormville/John Jay), who took a crossing pass into the box from classmate Matthew Matteo (Millerton/Webutuck), and got off a shot that found the back of the goal.

Freshman Gustavo Villalba-Cunha (Brooklyn/Evangel Christian School) scored his first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute for the final margin of victory.

Junior DeBottis and classmate Brian Wagstaff (Apalachin/Chenango Valley) split the game and shared the shutout today in goal.  DeBottis registered one save while Wagstaff made two stops.
 
Women’s Soccer (3-1)
 
Sept. 7th vs. RIT, W 1-0 (Mayor’s Cup Tournament at Hartwick)
Sept. 8th vs. John Carroll, W 5-1
SUNY Oneonta women's soccer wins the 2013 Mayor's Cup Tournament, their last coming in 2007, with victories over RIT and John Carroll.
 
In last Sunday's game versus John Carroll, Oneonta had five different players score in the 5-1 win. Sophomore Caitlyn LaPier (Chazy/Chazy) scored her first collegiate goal in the 29th minute of the game. She received the ball outside the left hand side of the box and cut toward the top where she struck a shot that went in the upper corner of the back post.
 
Senior Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) added a second goal just before the half as she broke through on a breakaway. The initial shot was saved by the Blue Streaks keeper, Haley McDonald, but the ball fell back to the feet of DeSimone who chipped it over the keeper and into the net.
 
The second half saw a first for three players as they all scored their first collegiate goals in an Oneonta uniform. Sophomore Kayla Distin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) put Oneonta up by three in the 61st minute. DeSimone broke down the right hand side of the field and placed a driven cross along the top of the 18 to Distin, who took one touch and floated the ball over the keepers head.
 
John Carroll would get on the board as Taylor Tercek took the ball from Oneonta keeper, Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster), and touched it into the goal to make the game 3-1 at the 82:47 mark.
 
Oneonta responded as they scored less than one minute later when Avery Serfis (West Hurley/Onteora) ripped a shot from the right hand corner just outside the eighteen to the upper corner on the back post.
 
Freshman Casey Walsh would make the final 5-1 when she put away a penalty kick, after a hand ball in the box, in the 87th minute.
 
Oneonta starting keeper, Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central), and Stark combined for five saves while their counterpart McDonald made nine.
 
On Saturday, the Red Dragons defeated preseason #23 RIT by the score of 1-0, played at Hartwick College. Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) scored the lone goal for Oneonta 2:20 into the second half. DeSimone once again played playmaker as she drove the ball across the top of the six yard box. Ceschini was able to slide a foot in front of the defender to put the ball into the back of the goal.
 
Oneonta held RIT to just three shots on the game.
 
Murphy didn't make a save in the shutout victory.
 
DeSimone was named Kim Muller Offensive MVP and Liz Lasota (Cutchogue/Mattituck) was named Tracey Ranieri Defensive MVP.
 
Senior Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield), junior Krystal Scott (Centereach/Newfield) and sophomores Ceschini and Erica Berry (Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
Field Hockey (4-1)
 
Sept. 7th vs. Rochester, W 4-3
SUNY Oneonta field hockey played spoilers as they upended the #18 preseason coaches ranked University of Rochester 4-3 last Saturday on All College Field.

Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden), who leads the team in goals, scored twice with the first coming 2:29 into the game. It all began with when Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) took the initial shot. The Yellow Jackets goalie made the save but Forbragd picked up the loose ball and fired it into the back of the goal.

Rochester responded well as they scored in the 20th minute off a penalty cornerOneonta would take a 2-1 lead into the intermission as Forbragd was back at it again. Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) maneuvered into the box with some nifty possession and dropped the pass off between her legs to Forbragd behind her. Forbragd touched the pass into the goal at the back post.

Day would open the scoring twenty minutes into play of the second half. Morgan started it by ripping a shot that hit the near post and ricocheted to Day at the back post, who tucked it in the backside to give Oneonta a 3-1 lead.

After a timeout by Rochester, they put the pressure on and pulled a goal back at the 68:43 mark. Randall took the penalty corner pass for Hoagland and once again put it past Tracy to cut the lead to 3-2.

Less than one minute later, Sara Rattigan (Mahopac/Lakeland) gave the Red Dragons a two goal lead as she picked off a pass inside the circle and fired it past the Rochester goalie, Madison Wagner.

Rochester would score one last goal as the game ended.

Oneonta outshot the Yellow Jackets 16-8 and held an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) made four saves to earn her second victory of the season.
 
Sept. 11th at Skidmore, L 2-4
Three unanswered goals in the second half gave the Skidmore field hockey team a come from behind victory over Oneonta, 4-2, in non-conference action last Wednesday at Wagner Park. The loss was the first of the season for the Red Dragons as they are now 4-1.

The Thoroughbreds struck first off a backhand at the 6:17 mark into the game. Oneonta would respond a minute and a half later to even the score at 1-1. Forbragd found the ball in front of the goal off her first shot that was saved by Haley McDougall, and tucked it in for her team leading sixth of the season.

Freshman Erin Butler (Walton/Walton) would put the Red Dragons up 2-1 with a goal just before the halftime break. Butler picked up the ball after a scramble in front of the Skidmore goal and slotted it past McDougall for her third of the season.

Skidmore took control of the game as they out shot the Red Dragons 14-2 in the second half. Skidmore tied the game five minutes into the second half and took a 3-2 lead in the 45th minute of play.

The Thoroughbreds continued to press and added an insurance goal at the 60:48 mark .

Servedio made ten saves in the game.
 
Volleyball (5-3)
 
Sept. 6th vs. Cazenovia, W 3-0; vs. Baptist Bible, W 3-0
Sept. 7th vs. Widener, L 1-3; vs. Union, L 1-3
The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team came away even from the Bomber Invitational at Ithaca this past weekend.  The Red Dragons split its four matches, winning its two matches on day one, but dropping a pair of matches the second day. 

Oneonta swept through both Cazenovia and Baptist Bible last Friday night.  Sophomore Jill Darpino (Endicott/Union Endicott) led the attack with a combined 24 kills and a hitting percentage of just under .500.  Her cumulative performance over the four matches earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team.  Darpino also collected 17 digs in the two matches.

In the Cazenovia match, freshman Jessica Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) had 16 assists to fuel the attack.  Against Baptist Bible, sophomore Karly Greco (East Patchogue/Bellport) led the team with 17 assists.  Sophomore Lauren Pennino (Wantagh/Wantagh) led Oneonta with six blocks for the two matches.

In Saturday's two matches, the Red Dragons fell in four sets to Widener and Union.  Darpino had 22 kills, 14 digs and four block assists.  Junior Becca Horton (Owego/Owego Free Academy) collected 37 assists.  Senior Kristina Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) led the defense with 45 digs while sister Jessica had 15 assists and five aces against Union.
 
Women’s Tennis (2-1)
 
Sept. 6th at Plattsburgh, W 9-0
Sept. 7th vs. New Paltz (at Plattsburgh), L 0-9
The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team came home with a split this past weekend of a pair of matches against SUNYAC East foes Plattsburgh and New Paltz. The Red Dragons swept Plattsburgh on Friday 9-0, but were swept on Saturday against New Paltz.

Against Plattsburgh, Oneonta surrendered only 24 games and won all the singles matches in straight sets.

Oneonta began the match with a sweep of the doubles. The closest match was at second doubles where seniors Colette Lankowicz (Sayville/Sayville) and Emily Maggiore (Binghamton/Binghamton) prevailed 8-3 over Meghan Ryan and Sarah Drexinger.

Senior Lauren Skolnick (Sayville/Sayville) and junior Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) won 8-0 at first doubles and Olivia Stauffer (Huntington/Harborfields) and Abigail Smith (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) won 8-2 at third doubles.

Sussman, Maggiore, Skolnick and Lankowicz came back and won their singles matches from first to fourth respectively. Sophomore Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer) had the most exciting match as she won the first set 6-3 and battled in the second to come out victorious 7-5. Classmate Riane Reithel (Penfield/Webster Schroeder) defeated Jacqueline Ciriello 6-2, 6-1 to claim the 6th singles match.
 
Sept. 11th at Mount Saint Mary College, W 9-0
The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team took approximately two hours to sweep through Mount Saint Mary College last Wednesday 9-0.

In winning the match, Oneonta surrendered only 13 games and won all the singles matches in straight sets.

Oneonta began the match with a sweep of the doubles. The first doubles duo, Skolnick and Sussman, started the afternoon off with an 8-1 win. Maggiore and Lankowicz followed suit at second doubles winning 8-2 while Stauffer and Smith won 8-1 at third doubles.

Sussman, Maggiore, Skolnick and Lankowicz came back and played singles for Oneonta. Sussman won at first singles, Maggiore at second singles, Skolnick won 6-0, 6-0 in third singles and Lankowicz won at fourth singles. Spencer and Reithel rounded out the singles wins. Spencer took the fourth singles win 6-0, 6-1 while Reithel won at sixth singles 6-0, 6-2.
