Baseball (12-25/7-11 SUNYAC)
Apr. 26th vs. Brockport, W 7-2
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team kept its SUNYAC tournament hopes alive with its 7-2 victory at home against Brockport last Friday.
A four-run seventh inning for Oneonta proved to be the big difference in the game while the pitching of sophomore
Steve Ascher (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) kept Brockport bats silent. Ascher pitched 8 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out six hitters en route to picking up his fourth win of the season.
The Oneonta bats came alive, recording 14 hits including a couple of hits with two outs to score key runs. Senior
IIvan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland) and sophomore
Jake Robinson (Oyster Bay/Oyster Bay) led the offense with three hits apiece. Senior
Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) drove in three runs including a pair in Oneonta's four run seventh.
The Red Dragons scored single runs in the first and second innings to jump out to an early lead.
Christopher Orlando (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) drove in the game's first run on a ground out to second base that scored Plata, who led off the inning with a single to left center field. In the second inning, freshman
Chris Romano (Mahopac/Mahopac) had a two-out single to left field to drive in Robinson from third for the game's second run.
Brockport got a run back in the top of the fifth inning. It all started with a one-out triple to deep center field that was just outside the reach of
Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia). The next batter drove home the run with a two-out single to left field.
Oneonta pushed its lead back to two runs with a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Massaroni hit a two-out double to left center that scored Plata from second base. Plata started the inning with a single and stole second to get himself into scoring position.
In the seventh inning, Plata led off with a double to right center and went to third on an infield single by
Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place). Plata scored on a single by Orlando. Haussel and Orlando both scored on Massaroni's double and Massaroni scored on a single to right field by Robinson.
Apr. 27th vs. Brockport, L 2-8; W 4-3 (10)
Senior
Nate Jones (Apalachin/Seton Catholic) walked off a winner last Saturday on senior day. Playing in his last home game in a Red Dragon uniform, he drove in the game-tying and game-winning runs while picking up his first collegiate win as a pitcher, as SUNY Oneonta defeated Brockport, 4-3, in the second game of a doubleheader at Red Dragon Baseball Field. The game 2 win earned Oneonta a split with the Golden Eagles, as Brockport won game 1, 8-2.
Jones entered the game in the top of the eighth with Oneonta trailing 3-2. Brockport recorded its only hit against him in the inning and had runners at the corners before Jones got the next batter to fly out to left field to end the threat.
In the bottom of the inning, Jones hit a one out single down the right field line that scored
Orlando from third base that tied the score at three apiece.
Jones retired the Golden Eagles in order in both the ninth and tenth innings to set up the 10th inning heroics.
Senior
Haussel led off the inning with a double to right center field. Orlando then bunted to sacrifice him over, but beat the throw for an infield hit. With runners at the corners, Brockport intentionally walked
Massaroni to load the bases. The next batter was Jones, who hit the first pitch he saw into left center field for the walk off hit.
Jones relieved junior
Mike McFerran(Albany/Catholic Central), who threw seven solid innings allowing six hits and three runs while recording four strikeouts.
Senior
Plata paced Oneonta's 12-hit attack with four hits including a double to leadoff the game for the Red Dragons. Orlando collected three hits while Jones had two hits and the two RBIs.
Softball (8-28/4-12 SUNYAC)
Apr. 26th at Union, L 3-6; L 3-4
Apr. 27th vs. New Paltz, L 1-2; L 2-12 (5)
Oneonta had a 1-0 lead in game 1 going into the top of the seventh as they plated a run in the bottom half of the first. A fielding error by the third baseman allowed junior
Chandler Campbell (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) to get aboard at first base. After a ground out, freshman
Cassandra Kohler (Walden/Valley Central) doubled over the center fielders head to put the Red Dragons on the board.
Oneonta's
Katie O'Flynn (Pearl River/Pearl River) and the Hawks’ pitcher both settled in as they allowed a combined 2 hits over the next five innings before New Paltz broke it open in the seventh.
A leadoff walk followed by a single put runners in scoring position for New Paltz. A second consecutive single by tied the game at 1-1. The Hawks then took the lead on a sacrifice fly to left field.
New Paltz won the second game 12-2 in five innings. Ten runs, nine unearned, in the first inning was all they needed as they cruised to the victory.
The Red Dragons got on the board in the fourth and fifth innings with single runs in each. Sophomore
Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) reached base on a fielding error by the second baseman to start the fourth.
Kristyn Neroda (Pearl River/Pearl River) came into pinch run for Rivera and advanced to second on a passed ball. With two outs,
Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) singled to left field, scoring Neroda.
In the fifth inning, Campbell walked with two outs and was pinch run for by
Gemma Mahoney (Pearl River/Pearl River). The next batter, Kohler, was hit by a pitch to move Mahoney to second.
Kelly Graham (Staten Island/Moore Catholic) stepped up and hit a blooper over the first baseman that stayed fair to score Mahoney.
Whittam finished the game 2-for-2 with one run batted in.
Men’s Lacrosse (3-11/1-5 SUNYAC)
Apr. 27th at Brockport, L 9-11
The SUNY Oneonta men’s lacrosse team travelled to Brockport for SUNYAC action last Saturday and fell on the road 11-9.
The Red Dragons had a 6-5 lead going into the halftime break. Oneonta got on the board just 1:26 into the game on a
Keith McNierney (Commack/Commack) goal off an assist from
Daniel Stern (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River).
The Golden Eagles would respond with a goal of their own. The Red Dragons would score a second goal on
Michael Metzger (Colonie, Colonie) first goal of the season. Once again, Brockport responded with a goal.
Oneonta would take a 6-2 lead on four consecutive goals by McNierney,
Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley), Stern and
Josh Heller (Plainview/Plainview JFK) before Brockport cut the lead to just a goal at half.
The Golden Eagles came out strong in the third and fourth as they scored 6 goals to take the 11-9 victory. The Red Dragons would tie the game at 9-9 with 9:55 left in the fourth on a goal by
Terence White (Rockville Center, Southside)
Devon Casey (Garden City/Kellenberg) and
Anthony Laureano (Holtsville/Sachem East) had Oneonta’s other goals in the third period.
Women’s Lacrosse (9-9/4-4 SUNYAC)
Apr. 27th at Oswego, W 20-13
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse task was simple last Saturday. Defeat Oswego on the road and you qualify for the SUNYAC tournament. The Red Dragons did just that, as they pulled away in the second half en route to a 20-13 victory over the Lakers.
Leading the way for the Red Dragons today was senior
Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy), who posted five goals and four assists. The four assists on the day brought her season total to 34, which is a new single season record for the women's lacrosse program. The assists also added to her program record for career assists, which currently stand at 74.
Back-to-back goals by Tulley got Oneonta off and running in the first half. After a pair of goals by sophomore
Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East), the Red Dragons led 4-1 just 13 minutes into the contest.
The Lakers ran off four unanswered goals over the next eight minutes to take a 5-4 lead.
Three straight goals by Oneonta including a pair on free position shots gave them the lead back at 7-5 with less than two minutes remaining in the opening half. The Red Dragons conceded a goal in the final minute, but took its 7-6 lead into halftime.
Oswego scored the first goal of the second half to tie the game for the last time at 7-7. It was all Oneonta from that point, as they ripped off four straight goals over a four-minute span to take the lead for good at 11-7.
Donodeo led all scorers in the game today with six goals. Classmate
Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) added four goals.
Junior goalie
Laura Grose (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) came up with five saves in the game to run her record to 6-5.
Apr. 30th at Brockport, L 10-14
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team was downed last Tuesday by Brockport, 14-10, in the first round of the SUNYAC tournament on the road. This was the first year of an expanded bracket that included a first round game between the No. 4 & 5 seeds. The loss for the Red Dragons completes a 9-9 season overall while Brockport moves on to face top-seeded SUNY Cortland on Friday in the conference tournament semifinals.
After falling behind 1-0 in the eighth minute, sophomore Donodeo and senior
Tulley scored back-to-back to give Oneonta its first lead of the contest at 2-1.
The Golden Eagles countered with four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead midway through the first half.
Sophomore
McNally scored off an assist from junior
Chelsea Collins (St. James/Smithtown East) to cut Brockport's lead back to 5-3.
The Golden Eagles scored three of the final five goals of the half to take an 8-5 lead into halftime. McNally scored both of Oneonta's goals with Donodeo assisting on both.
Brockport drew first in the second half before Oneonta stormed back with five unanswered goals to take a 10-9 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the game. Collins and McNally each had a pair of goals in the run.
Unfortunately, Oneonta was held scoreless for the latter part of the game while the hosts scored the final five goals for the final margin of victory.
McNally led Oneonta with five goals and one assist. Collins had two goals and two assists.
Junior
Grose made a career high 17 saves in the game, as Brockport tallied 36 shots for the game to Oneonta's 23 shots.
